David Beckham Must Show Up!

David Beckham - the Ambassador

For the MLS to be successful and show the fans their appreciation, the LA Galaxy must travel with David Beckham. He does not have to play in the games, but he MUST SHOW UP!

Since the announcement that Beckham was joining the LA Galaxy and the MLS, stadiums across America have been selling out to see the “Ambassador of the MLS”. This role was one that Beckham accepted whole heartedly and takes very serious, so why is Frank Yallop keeping him at home when they travel to Colorado?

Great question, and I wish I knew the answer to that.

Citing exhaustion after playing 3 games in 6 days, Beckham will not be travelling to the sold out stadium of fans wanting to see him play. Do not get me wrong here, I do not want anyone to play that can barely walk from being so tired, but I do believe that when Beckham took this role as Ambassador that it was his duty to show up to all the games, home and away.

He does not have to play, many fans just want to catch a glimpse of a world class player and if the fans get a chance to see one of the famous David Beckham bending free kicks, then it is a bonus. But to not even show up, that is doing an injustice to the fans themselves who took time out of their day, and money out of their pockets to see you…even if it is in a suit on the bench.

The MLS and Beckham had a small window to attract the American public to the league and the game of soccer, however that window is closing fast. It will not be nearly as tough of a ticket to get next year to see Beckham, so if the MLS wants to make its stamp in the crowed sports market of the US then Beckham must show up to games. Period.

  1. Welcome to SL Brad (ppl, say hello to Brad!).

Very interesting point, and one that makes sense if you look at the big picture and the reasons behind Beckham’s presence in the MLS.

I think he’s being left behind so that he can heal quicker (and traveling in a commercial airline (or by bus, whatever) is only going to increase the dangers of a serious injury considering the heavy traveling he’s doing and will be doing in the near future.

I agree with you, but the flip side here is that the heat needs to come OFF of Beckham and back on to the football, and if Beckham’s on the touchline waving to the cameras and the fans there’s a danger that it might not happen.

  2. I might agree with you if he were barely able to walk “from being so tired,” but since he’s barely able to walk because he’s been playing injured, I would say its past time someone ordered him to treatment and rehab.

Beckham is an ambassador, but also a player who needs both ankles — particularly the one he plants for those free kicks everyone has bought tickets to see. If he keeps making the next trip and playing the next match because it’s his duty, its possible none of us will see him strike the ball like that again. And that would be the real injustice.

Why Yallop is leaving Beckham at home would be an easy question, and you would know the answer, if the Galaxy would simply quit saying that he’s suffering from exhaustion and call a sprained ankle the injury it is.

  3. Well, for a soccer player to NOT play should be something frustrating for them, unless of course they enjoy taking the million dollar wages for doing nothing.

Seriously, if David Beckham is content to just become a poster boy and just SHOW UP, then i think he better hang up his boots and retain that wee bit of dignity and respect i still have for him.

  4. Hey Brad!(Is that what you mean Ahmed?)

  5. Thanks bloodbath for the warm reception. I hope to continue to spark conversation among the members and bring new ones to the site!
  6. Sorry, can’t agree. I understand the gist of your argument, but the Galaxy are in such dire straits that they have to get Becks and the rest of the team healthy and rested…at all costs. Becks can go do some publicity visits to Colorado when the season is over.

  7. I understand what each of you are saying, my concern is that the American public does not care about next year, or even how good the Galaxy are. They are obviously better if Beckham and Donovan are healthy and on the field, but it is essential for Beckham to make these appearances for the fans that paid the money to see him. There is a small window to win the faith and attention of the US, and that window is extremely small now. Hopefully Beckham will be back and ready to play to help the Galaxy make a run…only time will tell.

One thing i cant stand at all is the american vocabulary that will get more popular with every news item on beckham. For eg, what the **** is an assist? Did we even mention assists with respect to the beautiful game? I can see Ronaldinho, gerrard, cesc all becoming the king of assists soon. And also there should be a deliberate effort to mention the game as Football not soccer(Ahmed, take the hint, of course Footballlens is a bit too corny). Waiting with dread ,for the day when the playmaker will be called the pointguard……………

  9. you are scrip good in squadron footbal world i love you very
