What a ludicrous article.Beckham hasnt looked capable of lasting 90 minutes at any sort of decent level for a long time now, thats obvious. His limited ability isnt good enough if england truly believe they can take on the world.Beckhams ceiling as a player were teams like trinidad and tobago and estonia, any tougher and he ws always found out by good quality defenders well-trained to handle one-trick pony players such as he.And of all your frankly laughable arguements, the one about the scoring record takes the biscuit.Moore and Wright were DEFENDERS,not attacking midfielders.Beckham was a forward player, the desiganted free-kick and penalty taker and his record is nothing short of appaling.Hes scored about 3 or 4 goals from open play in 100 matches across 11 years and 6 free kicks out of hundreds of efforts-1 every 2 YEARS and never has he scored a successful free-kick v a top clas nation in all his underwhelming career. Its the pointless obsession and delusions over such mediocre players as Beckham thats been englands problem for a long time now and if we are to have any tangible chance of genunie success in 2010 then Capello will indeed surely seek to build a new and progressive team-one that is the complete opposite of the tireseomely dull eriksson-beckham ones which embarrassed england so badly at every major they went to.

I do not think that Beckham loses a lot due to his lack of speed. After all he is not a winger, he is a wide midfielder. Lennon is a winger, so is Wright-Phillips and they rely on trickery and pace to get into the opposition are and then do something with the ball. Beckham just gets the ball and passes it plus he makes defensive plays (Remember World Cup 2002? Mills and Neville were injured and then guess who Eriksson played as right back?).

I think that even age is not an enemy to Beckham. He should continue in the national team set-up because, even if he does not play, he could well be coming off the bench in case a tactical make over is required. Currently, he has proven himself to be Englnad's best player in the attacking area.

Bentley is another good example of a wide midfielder. Had it not been for his attitude which arguably cost Psycho a title with England's youngsters, he would have been a perfect candidate for that spot Bekham succesfully occupied over the past few years.

But after all has been said and done, Becks is still 32, and isn't getting any younger. Even in the qualifiers, his engine has seen to have gone.

Undeniable though his qualities are, I certainly don't think an English side that wants to qualify for the world cup could get any help from him. Not unless football starts playing more like rugby or American football, when specialists can be brought in to take set pieces.

And when the world cup finally comes round, he'll be 35. I for one would like to see Bentley given the chance to prove himself on the international stage. A new DB for a new England.

David Bentley that is.
