Jurgen Klopp advised to sign an replacement for Liverpool star

Five Things To Watch Out For

Daniel Sturridge - Liverpool FC

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has urged new manager Jurgen Klopp to bring in a replacement for Daniel Sturridge as the striker’s struggle to battle injuries continues at Anfield.

The England international was signed from Chelsea in January 2013. He had a good start to his Reds career and was instrumental alongside Luis Suarez in helping the Merseyside club come close to winning the title in 2013/14 season.

Since the start of the last term, Sturridge has been struggling with injuries. It is believed that he has picked up his sixth injury in last two years. Klopp confirmed the frontman was rested in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw to Tottenham and Europa League fixture against Rubin Kazan.

“They’re going to have to maybe look for an upgrade on Daniel Sturridge come January, or after that, because you cannot keep going like this without having a person of his quality not on the pitch,” Thompson said on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday.

“If he’s nearly ready and got a bit of swelling he’s got to play in the game because you can see how much he’s missed, but the longer he keeps missing games under Brendan, then if he’s missing a lot of game under Jurgen, Dan’s going to be thinking ‘where do we go?’

Liverpool sacked Brendan Rodgers and replaced him with Klopp. The Northern Irishman missed Sturridge’s services for most part of the last season. He signed Christian Benteke and Danny Ings in the summer transfer window.

Ex-Aston Villa striker is also suffering from an injury, while Ings has been ruled out for most part of the season with a knee injury. This leaves Klopp with Divock Origi as the only option up front. It should be seen if the German manager will bring in a new player in January or will he wait until the next summer window.
