Daniel Agger v Younes Kaboul / Liverpool v Tottenham
Tottenham transfer target Younes Kaboul and Liverpool player Daniel Agger are two of the best young central defenders in Europe at the moment.
Agger is one year older at 22 but has more experience playing at the highest level what with a full Champions League run for Liverpool culminating with a start in the final, senior Denmark squad and playing in the Premiership week in week out.
Kaboul is slightly taller and more imposing but Agger’s got a sweet left foot, better on the ball and is very composed. He’s also developing a propensity to score goals but whats interesting is that his goals aren’t typical of central defenders.
The goals he’s scored for Liverpool and Denmark have been classy, which strikers would be proud of scoring. Its like you can’t tell that hes a central defender when he gets into those positions whereas someone like Rio Ferdinand tends to blast them (although he is very good on the ball).
Agger is all about finesse and its no wonder journalists, fans and ex-players have compared him to the great Alan Hansen. You can understand why people were saying this guy is gonna be the main stay at Liverpool and Denmark for a long time.
If as expected Kaboul goes to Tottenham we might see the same level of progression seen in Agger but we’ll have to wait and see. The next Thuram…..maybe. People in France, especially well respected journalist Philippe Auclair seem to think so. But for the time being Agger looks like the better prospect both on the domestic and international stage.
So what do you guys think - can Kaboul do the same at Tottenham that Agger has done at Liverpool?
Will Kaboul fit in as seamlessly into the Tottenham back four as Agger did this season?

None of us spurs fans know because hes 21 and plays in the French league. Commolli hasn’t got one wrong yet and 13m euros for a 21 yr old centre back would suggest that this lad is going to be special. Not in a Rebrov sense though i hope.
Agger was abysmal in the Champions League final. I hope that Kaboul is nothing like him judging from that performance.
we dont know anything about this boy .why havent we bought a left winger
Kaboul will be understudy to Dawson, and King (as the latter missed a huge part of the season just ended)
and will not be a first choice for a couple of seasons at least.
Agree with the sentiments as above - I am sure he will be a good player, my concern is why we are investing such funds in a third centre back when clearly a left winger is the immediate priority?
I’m surprised that after scoring so many goals, and at the same time leaking so many, that you still feel a winger is more important than defensive cover Rich. It’s clear to me that with better defensive cover last season, we would have had a real shout at winning a major trophie (UEFA cup).
Rich, I think BMJ will play bale at left mid:
GK: Robinson,Cerney, Alnwick
RB: Stalts, Chimbo
LB: Assou-Ekotto, Lee (Rocha?)
CB: Dawson, King, Kaboul, Gardner
RW: Lennon plus any of:
CM: Jenas, Zokora, Ghaly, Murphy, Huddlestone, Tanio
LW: Bale, Malbranque, Taarabt
Str: Berby, Keano, Defoe + 1 signing
I can’t see us not getting another left footer, if we do then suely he would be a better choice to Bale. Kaboul would be a gr8 signing and would definetly improve our consistancy as we wouldn’t have 2 play gardner so much (who to be frank isn’t good enough) and therefore not conceed very many goals. As we do play so many goals when we get good cup runs I can see kaboul playing quite a few games.
TOBY I disagree that Bale will be used as a left winger straight away. Its still early days and I think there will be a left winger and a few more on their way. Going will be ziegler, murphy, mido, ghaly, gardner, stalteri
Don’t forget that with the African nations cup this summer we lose Zokora for up to around 6 weeks. This could potentially push King into CM leaving Kaboul to start at CB. Will be a shame to see Chelski losing Essien, Mikel, Kalou and Drogba for 6 weeks though…..I don’t think.
Correction - African Nations Cup this ’season’.
Toby…i think you should take murphy and gardener off of your list. I hope to god they are gone by the time the season starts. Both are ok players but not the quality players we should have as backup.
I agree with “wayne king”, with Leds out last season the need for defencive cover was obvious. We have players that can fill in on either flank but in defence …gardener?..nice guy, loyal player but will never hold down a place unless we sufffer a Munich disaster.
A left sided midfielder would be nice but what do we do?…do we buy someone to help bring on Bale or do we try and bring in a recognised star to take the slot as their own?. For me Martin Petrov kinda fits both of these criteria.
Anyway, there will be plenty of unfounded transfer storys for us all to either frown upon or cross our fingers hoping truth sits alongside it to keep us entertained for the next couple’o'months. Be cool chaps…COYS!!!!!!!!!!
Whoever wrote this has forgotten that our own Michael Dawson is also european and is better than both Kaboul and Agger by far!!!
Kaboul looks like the french terminator. From the few matches i’ve seen him, he looks very good, i don’t care if Agger scores goals… this guy can defend. The absence of Ledley for such a long part of last season cost us badly, the future french international looks a good squad player to me, especially if we play 63 games again.
@brian - you got that completely twisted up…Agger is simply noy comparable to Dawson, IMO. Dawson punts, Agger plays - end of!
As in the abstract - Agger’s got a sweet left foot, better on the ball and is very composed. He’s also developing a propensity to score goals but whats interesting is that his goals aren’t typical of central defenders
I think if we have the money then why not buy this Kaboul kid, he is clearly a big prospect and yeah he might not start a game straight away but the competition for the place has got to be a good thing, especially if we want to break into the top 4. Saying we shouln’t spend that ammount of money on him is wrong because any player with real quality that is going to improve the squad is worth buying. We are not short of money when all is said and done.
If the money situation was a problem then yeah I’d be inclined to agree that we need a left midfielder/winger more but it’s not so lets get both. In regards the left mid position my choice would be Quaresma from porto, just check this out and you will see why!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oedIThmq2BE
African nations cup this summer …absolutely Correct! The tournament is in summer (for southern hemisphere)
We won’t see the same kind of progress because he will be behind King and Dawson in and get few games the coming season. There is no ageing Hyypiaa at Spurs. Luckily.
@arron… Quaresma is clearly right-footed.
How you can compare Agger who is rated as the best young centerback in world football, has had an entire premiership season and champions league run under his belt and is a main stay in one of the meanest defences in european football to a prospect from france is a joke.
Everyone is forgetting Tom Huddlestone. He is a big lad and can play center back easily and he is only 20
Hey Palle, I just watched the quaresmo clip & yes he is clearly a right footer, but jeese what a right foot, the guy is outstanding can play on left or right, is able to strike the ball with both out & instep & uses his left foot too. If he is for sale then spurs could do far worse than to sign this guy
Just watched it again. wow, Ronaldo eat your heart out
Chid Man i agree Huddlestone centre back but lacks agreession like dawson. If anybody is in his way they had better move he’s coming through no matter what or who is there .Every time i see Hudds go to head a ball it’s like he does not want to mess up his hair. For a lad his size he in midfield nobody should beat him in the air but everybody does.I need to see Kaboul in the premiership 1st before judging.I don’t think we shouldnot rid ofRoutledge he will keep Lennon on his toes.
@palle quaresma is clearly a left midfielder. he is just a right-footed left midfielder, or if lennons injured he could be a right midfielder, either way he is very good.
@Conor @arron @palle quaresma plays both sides of the field, he’s like ronaldo and figo in the sense that he can swap sides on the pitch at any time, he and ronaldo do it on the international stage often.
and @simon, the champions league couldn’t show Agger at his best ’cause the game was so boring and the ball was in the middle of the pitch 80% of the time.
Brian, Dawson better then Agger? i can’t believe u said that..u must be blind or didn’t watch EPL for quite sometime..
Agger better than Dawson, dont make me laugh
whoever said “Dawson punts, Agger plays - end of”
more like “Dawson defends, Agger makes mistakes”
