United v Arsenal, Barcelona v Shakhtar, Milan v Inter and more

The football community is abuzz with last Tuesday’s unexpected episode of hooliganism at Upton Park, the Championship League draw, and some excellent football matches this weekend. There’s also the ‘over-the-top’ outrage at Eduardo winning a soft penalty against Celtic and for our money, the press has in the past and always will make a mountain out of nothing for a story.

Of course, this mountain has moved UEFA to do the ‘PC’ thing and ban Eduardo for 2 games. It’s not a witch-hunt but Eduardo has been made an example out of for the rest of the Champions League season. Let’s see if it has any impact on diving this year.

Barcelona v Shakhtar Donetsk
Barcelona and Shakhtar Donetsk – last season’s Champions League and UEFA Cup winners respectively – square off in Monaco tonight. Will Barcelona continue their form from last season or suffer a dip, as United did at the start of last season after their double act of winning the league and european cup?

Manchester United v Arsenal
Some people seem to classify Arsenal as favourites here, so maybe United will go ahead and surprise / disappoint everyone by winning again?

AC Milan v Inter Milan
The Milan derby kicks off early in the season, but you can expect pundits to declare the season over for whoever loses this one. My money is on Inter losing before kicking on to beat all comers and make a mockery of Milan ambitions come May 2010. Unless Juve get in the way…
