Daily News Roundup: 12 April 2007
You already know that Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and AC Milan are through to the Champions League semis.
You probably also know that Jorges Mendes wipes his arse with his reputation and that the Guardian is little better, but let’s have some proof of that today, shall we?
1. Mendes pimping Ronaldo to Real Madrid
Here’s the Soccerlens debate on this topic, but I just want to touch on this and summarise the news:
Jorge Mendes (Ronaldo’s agent) and Franco Baldini (Madrid’s sporting director, Predrag Mijatovic’s right-hand man and responsible for Madrid’s transfer signings) reportedly met in London last Wednesday (last week), and here’s what was agreed:
- Real Madrid are willing to pay Manchester United’s asking price for Ronaldo - and this asking price is reportedly €80m (£54m).
- Real Madrid are also willing to improve on any contract offer made by Manchester United.
- Mendes has reportedly claimed that Ronaldo will reject United’s contract offer, and is asking for £140,000 a week.
- Mendes has reported assured Madrid that Ronaldo will force an exit from Old Trafford.
You’re free to discuss this as much (or as little) as you wish. It’s bullshit - there are no 140,000 / week demands and Ronaldo doesn’t want to leave although yes, United could sell for 50m.
2. England vs Brazil at Wembley, June 1st
The headline says it all really.
It will be England’s first international at Wembley since 2000. The rest, you can read here.
3. Newcastle chase new manager
Roeder has done a decent job at Newcastle but the rumours refuse to go away. Sven Goran Eriksson is the newest name to be ’seriously’ bandied about, although at this stage this is speculation, nothing else. As speculation goes, you might find this one - of Mourinho managing Newcastle - far more interesting.
Another possibility is Alan Pardew (I’d like to see that), while Alan Shearer is an old fan-favourite but probably not ready for management just yet.
4. Premiership wants window for England games
We’ve covered this earlier (when the Premier League initially proposed this to IFAB) - now Premier League chief Richard Scudamore is talking to the press about his proposal.
“We should try to rationalise the calendar to give the England manager blocks of time with the players.
(Especially) at times when it is frustrating for clubs to let them go.
I would like to see the double-header weeks extended, so all internationals are played in blocks of two or three weeks.
Then the England manager has got a chance, working with the players on an extended basis to recreate a club feel.”
This would mean that England get two blocks of 3 weeks to play internationals - after Christmas and at the end of the domestic season.
Sensible, let’s hope that Fifa agree.

- Can Uefa do better than just complain in the media about European policing standards?
- Graham Poll used video evidence in a post-match review to charge Leroy Lita with violent conduct. How long before they do that with diving, and make this a standard practice?
- Spartak Moscow’s 23 year old winger Vladimir Bystrov is reportedly being chased by Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and Manchester United. I doubt that United would buy him, so it could be another Premiership club instead of us.
