Coloccini headed for Newcastle United?

Ed Harrison from the Newcastle United blog reports that Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has reportedly launched a move to sign Fabricio Coloccini from Deportivo La Coruna.

Newcastle reportedly bid for Coloccini back in January (don’t know if those reports were serious) and overall, the Argentinian defender has looked quite composed whenever he’s been on the international stage.

Can Newcastle attract Coloccini? They certainly have the star power and money to do so, and Newcastle should easily be able to trump Portsmouth in any bid for the player.

Newcastle badly need a couple of quality defenders this summer, and Coloccini fits the bill as far as experience and quality is concerned.

This is a player who couldn’t break into Milan (could you if you were behind Nesta and Maldini) but he’s just 25 and has been a mainstay for club and country in the last couple of years.

And he just might solve a lot of Newcastle’s problems…

The question is, will Roeder go for Coloccini?

  1. fact is that Sheppard made such a hash of the Luque deal that deportivo stated they would never do business with us again!

So any stories about us being linked to a La Coruna player are treated sceptically.

  2. That’s kinda tragic, because Coloccini would be a solid buy. But who knows, given the right offer, Depor might just turn receptive…

Would be nice to give them Luque back

  4. Dave - that’s an excellent point - we had a lot of problems with the deal I remember - and of course the Luque transfer has turned out to be a disaster for Newcastle.
Kind of hope that doesn’t stand in the way of a deal - if Roeder wants Coloccini though.

  5. Shaun - yes - let’s try for a straight swap - Luque for Coloccini !!
