Of course they should pay compensation as the clubs have no say in the matter - they MUST release their players for international duty. It is easy to say that they could just have easily been injured playing for their clubs, of course they could, but the fact of the matter is that they weren't, they were injured playing for their countries and due compensation should be paid to their clubs for their loss.

By the way - the French FA don't insure their players, which in my book is criminal neglect. All FA's should be forced to insure enough coverage to cover, medical bills, wages and compensation to clubs (as it is they who suffer most from any player absence - at least the player still gets paid).
