Chelsea welcome their new Special One

Written by Jay Maniyar

Avram Grant - Chelsea Manager

While Jose Mourinho’s antics might inspire you to believe that the Portuguese wild cat brilliantly takes attention off his team and onto himself, his successor at Stamford Bridge goes one better to actually take the attention off Chelsea FC itself.

Yes, how smartly Avram Grant has pressed the OFF switch to ensure that the media hovers more around Arsene Wenger’s explosively-talented Arsenal, Manchester United’s ruthlessly efficient squad and Liverpool’s hierarchical problems.

What we all must learn from Grant is that you can even win matches without creating a fuss about them. Mourinho did everything he could to bring attention to Chelsea and turn them into a permanent member of the Big Four. But that cost him eventually. When defeats and poor performances piled up and with Mourinho also not treating the fans and his Russian owner to the kind of satiating football that they desire, he had to eventually depart. Grant stays on. He has been handed a
four-year contract by the club. And that despite defeats at fierce rivals Manchester United and Arsenal.

Mourinho would have all but ensured that his team do not return empty-handed from Old Trafford or the Emirates, if not by his football and tactics then by his off-pitch ramblings and antics. Grant just cant do that. But his team and fans aren’t complaining either. Grant’s silence has worked hard to ensure that Chelsea win with efficiency when they do win games. He doesn’t scream, shout, abuse, ramble and doesn’t even pioneer win-at-all-costs. Chelsea’s ambition is to win the Champions League and Grant might actually do that, as silently as he has won all his matches.

In short, he has tamed Chelsea to focus completely on football and not to induldge in managerial star wars and useless mind games.

Mourinho is the only Special One we know. And that is largely due to the fact that the crown was self-proclaimed. Grant isn’t even seeking such a title. But we may well be advised to give it to him if he does win Chelsea the Champions League.

You cant compare Avram Grant with Jose Mourinho.

  2. 24/12/2007 OJO ADEMOLA

I’ve never read such a rubbish. If this was Grant’s website, he couldn’t have done better. Jose wasn’t fired for poor result, if so, Wenger would have even been sued by Arsenal! Grant is the stark evidence of a parochial appointment, by an owner who cared less what we fans think.Lets see how the fan base increase under Grant. The publicity Jose brought to the Chelsea name worldwide, even Abramovich could not have afforded. Barca, Madrid, Milan etc., must be cursing themselves for not appointing Grant! Give us a break.

Grant can never hold a candel to the special one, Jose wasnt fired cause of bad results he was sacked because Roman couldnt control him. Roman knew Jose had the fans and players on his side, and as soon as Jose made the smallest slip Roman pounced and installed a man he could manipulate

  4. 24/12/2007 More true

Have to agree that this is rubbish. Grant is reaping the rewards of José’s work but has in his own work proved to be truly unimaginative and un-special. He has not a clue about what to do when the games don’t go the way he wants them. He will never be a great manager, but maybe Chelsea only needs a somewhat competent. Grant’s talent is an ability to get along with people, especially the ones that matter. The talent in the team is great enough to win the Champion’s League - after all what you need most is luck to win that cup. José was fired as the club had no room for two gigantic egos. But to compare the work of Grant to what José did is unfair to all parties. Maybe if Grant can come up with some interesting players he can start playing his own game, Chelsea now is playing exactly as José had them playing to survive last season. Evry word about us being more attacking and attractive if that is the word is purely lies.

  5. [...] More praise for Avram, not so much for Jose (Soccer Lens) [...]

  6. Del Bosque was never considered a tactical brain, but he won 2 Champions Leagues in 3 years. JT wants a clause in his contract to manage Chelsea when he retires; he’ll get plenty of chances with Grant in charge. I agree with MT - Chelsea needs a negotiator to settle the dressing room and to make sweet love to the media.

Let’s hope Grant’s got a tight rectal sphincter, because the Fleet Street boys are really demanding on new flesh… And that’s a metaphor, folks. I don’t really think Grant’s got a tight anus.

  7. 26/12/2007 I cum from Ipanema for Brazilans

True, true, fds! Fleet Street arsebandits would love it, just love it, if Grant bent over and let them have a free hit. They’ve been missing the stuff from dear old Jose and want that sexy, sexy man to cum back to London so they can gaze once more upon his sneering, jeering, arrogant visage and furiously jack off under their lapels as they think of all the stupid, sheep-like punters who swallow their ill-conceived and lazily written words like so much ill-produced jism.

And for what it’s worth, I don’t think it’s a metaphor, either. Look at the way he hides himself in his saggy trackie daks. There’s a guy who knows when his once firm, plump arsecheeks have yielded to the ravages of age and are now pointing gracefully to the ground to which he will soon return.

But I don’t think it’s a metaphor to say that Grant licked Abramovich’s arsehole to get the job.

  8. 26/12/2007 DBeech

I agree with your comments that Grant is making a deliberate attempt to reduce the amount of spotlight on Chelsea and that this can only be a good thing for the team. But the reduced spotlight also has a lot to do with the fact that Chelsea just haven’t been that good this year. Morever, I think we should hold back on giving Grant a ticker-tape parade given that his side were beaten by Arsenal just a short while ago.

  9. Avram Grant is nothing more than Romans puppet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Chelsea is currently the 2nd (or 3rd) most popular club in football according to recent stats. That is MOSTLY due to Jose (in part also Roman’s millions). Jose managed to achieve what he was contracted to achieve - make Chelsea global. How do you even dare compare Grant to Jose? (and I’m not even a Chelsea supporter).

I don’t think it’s a matter of Grant’s deliberate silence that got the media to focus on the other teams. I believe it is more a matter of Arsenal’s ’suprise’ form this season (with ‘youngsters’) that got the media to focus on the title race between them, United and Liverpool. Chelsea have already been written off to some degree after Jose’s departure. Liverpool’s in-house problems made this more of a ‘2-horse media frenzy race’. Not Grant’s personality.

  11. can we all give avram a break.he hasnt even been in charge of chelsea for half a season and people r already comparing him to jose.some are even calling him roman’s puppet.wel i dont think any of us is in any position to lambast him like this.we shud all give him a chance-a break is the right word-at the end of his first full season we can then arraign him in front of all the judges we can think of.afterall he is managing an inherited squad.
