Chelsea transfer: Baba set to be announced as a Chelsea player

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Bundesliga club FC Augsburg for the transfer of Abdul Baba Rahman, the club has confirmed on their official website

Although the transfer fee has remained unclosed, but The Times understand, it is around £21.7m.

Jose Mourinho had earlier stressed the importance of signing a left-back in the summer after Filipe Luis was allowed to leave to join his old club Atletico Madrid.

Baba Rahman’s arrival could see Cesar Azpilicueta being shifted to right back in place of Branislav Ivanovic. The 21-year-old defender has expressed his joy to have signed for Chelsea and says he can’t wait to train with his new team mates.

Rahman said: “I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can’t wait to train with my new team-mates and very much looking forward to working with them and Mr Mourinho

“I thank all those responsible, coaches and fans of Augsburg for their support and this chance to play at a top club in England is a simple choice, even if I had actually planned on a long-term stay in Augsburg a year ago,”

Baba Rahman enjoyed a successful last season with Augsburg, where he made 31 league appearances and helped his side qualify for the Europa League

The Ghana defender is a pacy and attacking full-back who can also operate as a midfielder or winger. The exciting youngster has made more successful tackles than any other player in the Bundesliga last term, and also attempted the most crosses from the left flank.

The news would bring slight relief to the Chelsea camp, with the Blues having made a stuttering start to their 2015-16 Barclays Premier League campaign. The Champions were humiliated 3-0 by Manchester City on Sunday, which leaves them without a victory in their opening two matches.
