Marco van Ginkel hasn’t exactly had the time of his life since making his dream move to Chelsea in the summer of 2013. The Dutch midfielder, just as he was feeling his way into the Blues’ setup and the English league as a whole, suffered an unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury which kept him out almost the whole season.

Nemanja Matic was brought in in January and therefore, Van Ginkel was deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and sent on loan to AC Milan. Now, 4 months after making that move to San Siro, he is considering a return to Stamford Bridge, Italian website Gianluca Di Marzio has reported.

Unfortunately, Van Ginkel has not managed to find regular first-team football at Milan, and manager Filippo Inzaghi has stated that it is not something he can guarantee in the future either.

“We have many midfielders, I’ve even told him that. I can’t assure playing time to anyone, but we hold the player in high regard”, Inzaghi said in his latest press conference.

It may therefore, make a lot of sense for the former Vitesse man to return to Chelsea this month and be loaned to a club where he can play regularly. He was hailed as the ‘next Frank Lampard’ during his time in the Eredivisie and at just 22, clearly has a big future ahead of him. Jose Mourinho will though, at this formative stage in his career, want him to be at a club where is playing week-in, week-out.
