Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is set to join Premier League Champions Manchester City on a sixth month loan from MLS outfit New York City FC.

Chelsea fans worldwide have spent much of the summer dreaming of Fàbregas through balls and Costa hattricks in anticipation of the imminent 2014/15 season but have now been given a rude awakening following news that their former vice-captain could join league rivals Manchester City. Many of the clubs’ younger supporters will not remember a Chelsea squad that did not involve Frank Lampard but they may have to face up to the very real prospect of seeing their club legend who made over 600 appearances for the club; play in sky blue as opposed to the royal blue he has become synonymous with.

The 36 year old spent thirteen successful years at Chelsea, netting 211 goals -making him Chelsea’s all-time top goal scorer, could well be making a swift yet contentious return to the Premier League in a shock move to Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The story has been weighted by fact that the Major League Soccer franchise is owned by Manchester City and so seems probable that such an agreement could have been reached.

The MLS season does not get underway until early March 2015 and Frank Lampard is keen to play at a high level in order to maintain match fitness ahead of his stint at New York. Speaking in America at his press conference last week Lampard said “I will have to keep fit. I’ll have to train at the very top level, whether that’s on my own or with a club somewhere, I’ll have to see.”

However, it appears that the player is zealous in his loyalty to Chelsea Football Club and has made it clear that he would not want to be involved in the squad when the two Premier League giants clash, one of which will occur on Chelsea’s fifth game of the season when they take on Manchester City at the Etihad in September.

It’s a deal that could further help City, a team who in recent years have been accused on relying too heavily on foreign players, to augment their English player quota as they seem resolved to register Lampard for both their Premier League and Champions League squads.

The official announcement could be made in the coming days.
