Everybody writing this kind of article at this stage of the season covers themselves with 'early days' or 'too early to call'. Both true but they just can't help themselves!

Previous seasons should be a guide to jumping the gun!

Utd and Liverpool are both going through adjustments as a result of key players leaving so a settling in period is to be expected. Despite this it's Utd's best start (points wise) in 3 seasons.

All you need to learn about Arsenal was seen at OT last Saturday...and that's why nobody tipped them at the outset.

I tipped Chelsea and see no reason to change that. But that said, I agree with with Gervillian, things could change and who have they played so far?

As Mark Lawrenson once said, 'there's no point in looking at the table until we're 10-12 games into the season, when a pattern has started to form.'

Chelsea are going to be very much in contention this year, but a few words of caution wouldn't go amiss: firstly, I remember their start to last season was exceptionally good too, so it's still way too early to be handing out prizes (or writing anyone off); seondly, the average age of that team would give cause for concern, perhaps not in terms of performance, but perhaps in terms of recovery time from injury. Lampard, Drogba, Terry, Carvalho, Anelka, Ballack, they're all thirty-ish now. And finally, there's an African Nations Cup in January, so that's Drogba, Mikel and Essien out of the frame for between four and six weeks including preparation. There's still a very long way to go.
