Cerny to stay in Tottenham goal?

Spurs’ 3-1 defeat to Newcastle was a little unfortunate last night, as the North London side found themselves not performing too badly at St. James’ Park.

Despite an early fumble and panicked gather from Czech stand-in goalkeeper Radek Cerny, how did the Tottenham stand-in keeper perform?

He did well, considering this was a difficult game for him to come into, and Robinson’s long run in the side meaning the Czech international has hardly played in goal for Tottenham.

He saved well from Michael Owen in the first half though, as the diminutive striker’s right-footed curling shot could not find its way into Cerny’s bottom left.

He also did well to stop Obafemi Martins at his near post, making his body big and blocking the Nigerian’s route to goal.

He could not stop the rapid African on the stroke of half-time though, as the Tottenham defence were undone by a long ball slotted home by Martins, with Cerny able to get some, but not enough contact on the shot.

From here on in, Cerny did not do much wrong. He could not have done too much about Cacapa’s headed goal five minutes into the second half, and certainly couldn’t do anything about James Milner’s superb volley at the second time of asking.

Robbie Keane did score in between these two goals, but it was not enough as Tottenham were once again the losing side. In their defence however, they never looked like giving up and tried to score until the last.

Cerny faired well against quick and sharp opposition, and if Paul Robinson is fit to play the next game, should Cerny still be given the nod?

I think that if Jol were to leave the England number one out, it would prove to be a learning curve for him, as for the majority of his playing career has been spent as being his club’s number one (Leeds and now Spurs).

Though he is Spurs’ number one when he plays to full potential, he has not been doing it this season, so maybe if Jol were to start Cerny ahead of him, he may realise that he has to raise his game, and this can only be better for both Tottenham and England.
