Can Totti play in the Premiership?

Written by Ahmed Bilal

After watching Totti score yet another well-taken goal (video below), I’m wondering if he could play well in the Premiership?

The obvious concerns will be raised - he’s Roma for life (at one point so was Sheva for Milan), he’s Italian and won’t leave home (Cannavaro and Zambrotta?) and he might not be fast enough for the Premiership (is Larsson? Solskjaer? Sheer pace isn’t everything).

I don’t think Totti will come, mainly because of fan loyalty and because he won’t get the same elevated status he gets at Roma anywhere else.

It would be good though, to see him trot out in the Premiership (even if he was playing for Liverpool or Chelsea - or Tottenham :P ).

Ahmed - how is that a ‘classy solo effort’? Ronaldo’s winner against Fulham was a classy solo effort, this is a route 1 goal with a good first touch from Totti and a reasonable finish.

  2. Hugo - I guess my standards have really plummeted after watching the football on display in the past few weeks. I’ll correct that, but the question still remains - is he good enough to play in the Prem, and if so, where can he fit in?

  3. Tooti has a poor attitude and I can’t see him wanting a premiership move, he’ll always prefer the weather!!!!! If he did come to the premiership, who would he play for, not Man U Arse or Chelsea! he wouldn’t play for anyone else!

My opinion is that he is talented enough to play for a top 5 club, but that no such club will take a risk on him (presuming that he would want to leave Roma in the first place, which is not that likely). As such, I can’t see any move materialising.

  5. Totti is simply good enough to be brilliant in any team or league in the world…

Ahmed, but what do you mean by saying; “he’s Italian and won’t leave home (Cannavaro and Zambrotta?)”. Cannavaro and Zambrotta are in Spain, is that their home or do you count the whole Mediterranean Sea as one country as the Roman’s did?

  6. As someone who watches many of Roma’s matches (my second favorite team after United), I can tell you Totti is pure class, he’s one the best Italian players ever. Roma is probably that most entertaining and most attacking minded team in the Serie A.

I’d say Totti would be perfect for the prem, because his playing style is based on quick first time passes (he passes on his first touch alot) and first time shots and touches. Which works well in the Premiership, unlike say Veron’s style, which didn’t work mainly because he dwelled too long on the ball.

He’d also has style that would make even Cristiano Ronaldo blush. Amazing back heel tricks and passes, the kind that Cantona used to do.

If you have any doubt he isn’t the best number 10 Italy has had in ages, go look at any of his compilation vids on youtube.

That said, I don’t think he’ll ever leave Roma. His tie to his team is stronger than any of the players you mentioned had with thiers, Ahmed. He’s even left the national team because he considers Roma a priority.

  7. Ahmed, that goal you’re so impressed with is nowhere near his better goals (which he has loads of). Make sure you check out some of the Totti compilations on YouTube.

  8. And here I was hoping that someone would do the hard work for me so I could just link to the videos and create a totti’s amazing goals post…

  9. I’ll try and find a vid with not only goals but also dribbles and passes.

  10. Thanks megalon :)

  11. Try this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxhJneJwT_k

I’m having some trouble with YouTube, the vid is taking ages to load, but I think this is a compilation that I’ve seen before with loads of goals, passes, dribbles, etc.

Totti would shine easily in the premiership. Because he is both physically strong, has the skill and arrogant as hell. It’s almost a pity he is so loyal to Roma. Credit to him for that loyalty though…
