Manchester City v Tottenham preview

Tottenham take on high-flying Manchester City at the Eastlands in the first of two Carling Cup 07/08 quarterfinals being played tonight.

As Juande Ramos rebuilds Tottenham (in body and spirit) with next season in mind, he will know that while a Champions League spot is perhaps too far away for his injury-riddled side, his side has a good shot at a couple of decent cup runs and an outside chance of making it to the Uefa Cup (10 points difference may be too much if King is absent for the second half of the season). Tottenham will go into this game with a lot riding on this game and hopefully Ramos can help the players raise their standards as Tottenham have done in the past against big teams (not that City is a *big* team, but still).

Spurs are coming off an away win against Portsmouth and a home win against Manchester City in the league, games that will give the Tottenham players a lot of confidence.

Having said all the above, Manchester City still start the game tonight as favourites - not for their 4th placed perch in the Premier League or that it’s a home game but because Tottenham not conceding goals is a rarity (home or away) and the current Manchester City team is well equipped to pick their opponents off on quick counter attacks. And when you consider that Dawson and Robbie Keane will be missing from the Tottenham lineup as well, and all signs point to a Manchester City win.

Except that this is Tottenham, and when you expect them to disappoint they end up serving a thriller to remember for a long time. Let’s hope tonight is one of those games, because the other game is going to be a scrappy game of balls and no football.

  1. “not that City is a *big* team, but still”

Laughable comment, learn about football first son before coming out with something like that!

  2. Not that City is a big team - I find that harsh, and I’m a Spurs fan! City are a big team, definitely, in terms of Money, Stadium and fanbase - they are also mixing it with the big boys too. Sure they’re not as what I think is your first love Ahmed (Man U) but apart from Arsenal and Liverpool - which team is? I wouldn’t call City minnows..

Like you say - this is going to be a great match - with both teams being equal in terms of ability.

City have the edge in terms of this being a home game for them - but I’m hoping that Spurs have the psychological edge in that we beat them at the Lane, not long ago. Also - getting a crucial away win and clean sheet at one of the other form teams in the Prem helps a great deal!

Going to the match tonight - first time at Eastlands - so excited! Like a kid in a sweet shop!

  3. Nice one DBsKnees.

I am a blue but know a few lads in your end tonight. I was at the game down yours last week. Enjoy tonight.

Think we will do you though lol

  4. Thanks CITD,

Wish I was as confident as you mate. I think Spurs have got a chance, but I HATE saying anything / making predictions before a match.

Usually my bad feelings come true, good feelings come true, and sometimes I have an ‘either way’ feeling - they usually result in scorchers! (For neutrals - I usually end up almost having a heart attack!)

The sad thing is - at the moment it’s an ‘either way’ feeling - DOH!

  5. Spurs have got a chance tonight… No chance.
Sven is gonna get us to that cup final because he is a god (not ‘the god’ just ‘a god’)

  6. Now then Al! Lets give the boys some hope.

  7. Mancal, if you think that - you may be sorely disappointed. Spurs are no push overs - Ramos can mix it with the best of ‘em. Yes even ‘Godly’ Sven…. :-S

The score is going to be 2-1 or 3-2 …. I haven’t decided to whom yet!

  8. DBsKnees…
I’ve gotta be optimistic as a City fan.
Realistic is the same as pesimistic for us lot ya see!

Spurs are playing with real confidence at the moment, the Popmey result was superb, but I think we’ll shade it!

  9. we beat you the other week so that has put confidence in the spurs lads so i think it will be close

  10. Gentleman, ladies - I thank you.

Mine eyes have seen the glory. What a great performance from the Lilywhites - repelling all of what a confident, high-flying City had to throw at their ten men.

I had 400 heart attacks during that game - but when Steeeeeed scored the adrenalin flowed… BOY DID IT FLOW….
