Can Manchester United win the title?

Written by Ahmed Bilal. Tagged: Manchester United

Manchester United are 8 points clear (although that lead will almost certainly be cut down to 5 points with a Chelsea-style thumping of Newcastle), and with their best yet to come, Manchester United are being installed as favourites by some bookies.

The next three weeks are absolutely crucial - If Manchester United can navigate the nex5 5 games and get the maximum 15 points by beating West Ham away, Aston Villa away, Wigan home, Reading home and Newcastle away (the last 4 games coming in 10 days, the last 2 in 3 days), we’ll be at 59 points by Monday night, 1st Jan and it will become very hard for any team to catch up with Manchester United.

So what do you think - can Manchester United win the title?

  1. Yawn. Probably. They’ve been playing well enough but it always boils down to not dropping points. You need to win at home, not lose away, and also pick up points away as well. There’ll be the odd shock defeat but all in all we knew who the top four would be back in September so the topic is a little tired (unless you’re a United fan…)

To answer your question - don’t write off Chelsea, but Liverpool and Arsenal are not good enough this term.

  2. Can they win it? Course they can. Will they? I’d like to think so.

There’s a long time to go, and I think the past three years have been very humbling for United fans. We’d be setting ourselves up for a huge fall to go around claiming we’re going to win the league. But I can’t help but see images in my head of Gary Neville lifting the trophy…

We’re playing better football than Chelsea, and we have a better team spirit than them. Our problem has always been consistency, even when we were winning the league three seasons in a row… and so we need to keep on with the form we’re going through at the moment.

If we dont buy a seasoned, premiership ball-winner like Pedro Mendes of Portsmouth,we will lack depth!Manuel Fernandes is NOT a ball-winner,leave him alone!Mendes is the new KEANO!For the love of God,we’ve missed out on Marcos Senna and Hargreaves will take time to adapt to the premiership(and he wont be able to play for us in Europe anyway!)Please SAF and co.buy Mendes who is hungry for success and will allow us the luxury of rotating Carrick and Scholes.Imagine using the Carrick-Mendes partnership in the centre of the park, and when the going gets rough, take out Carrick and put in Scholes! We would be the envy of the world! Please SAF,DG,CQ,the Glazers;dont allow you’re pride to blind you of seeing the reason of buying this midfielder who will definitely take us to the finish line on both the domestic and foreign fronts! For a player like Mendes to play against a team like Chelsea and not be dominated(irrespective that they lost) is not an easy task!

  4. Some people are obsessed with Pedro Mendes for some reason. He’s mediocre to the last bit, United do not need him.

  5. Mendes would piss himself in the derby when Thatcher runs onto the field…

  6. Sportswriting in general and it seems especially when it comes to football, is sometimes turning into the art of stating the obvious. I cant think of any game this season that hasnt been absolutely crucial, and it is of course vital that we dont drop points against the lesser teams, do not loose any matches at home and of course its even more important that we dont drop any points to our nearest rivals:) Only that way we will be able to win the title!

  7. I’m a die hard football (soccer) fan from the US and ManU has always been my team. Watching their form this season has been fun and frustrating all together. Their wins in the premiership have been ok, but not overly exciting. Ronaldo should have 5 to 6 more goals to his name and Saha just isn’t the goal poacher that Ruud was. I really wish Alan Smith was at his old form and playing in the central mid with Carrick, he was a ball winner and his venum was contagious to everyone around. I’m happy that we have finally put a solid defence together and honestly they have held us through some close one’s. Why we haven’t done better on the european front is just beyond me and that has to change before we will be a top flight club again, even the thrashing of benfica was not cleanly done in my book. We need another out and out striker and a good central mid fielder so we can keep rooney out front and stop playing this 4/5/1 BS!

  8. …not to mention injuries and fatige!!

  9. They can. So can Chelsea. So that’s never been an issue for debating me thinks.

    Will they is the question…..

    I hope they will
