Can Everton Catch Liverpool?

3 points behind (4 if you factor in the goal difference) and 5 games to go – can Everton catch Liverpool?

David Moyes seems to think so:


“We are optimistic, we believe we can still catch Liverpool. That’s 60 points and we have won 18 games in the Premier League, and with five to go we can end with a very healthy tally in an excellent position.

We can put pressure on Liverpool, and if we do that and win at Birmingham next weekend it will be our highest points tally in the Premier League, that is the first objective.”

Liverpool have 3 away games in their last 5, and it’ll be interesting to see if Rafa can get his men to give their all in the league this late in the season.

Everton on the other hand have 3 home games (although one of them is Chelsea, and one of the away games is to Arsenal), and they should be looking at ideally 11 points from their last 5 games (assuming that they win 3 and draw the two big four games). Even then Liverpool would need just 8 points from their last 5 to stay ahead, and if they don’t slip up away from home, the 4th spot should be wrapped up by the end of April.

Moyes can say what he likes, but at this point it’s as much a matter of keeping 5th spot as it is of pushing for 4th. The most Everton can do is win as much as possible, guarantee 5th spot as a minimum and then invest in their squad over the summer to help Moyes match up better with the likes of Liverpool.

    They need better players, indeed. Wonder if they can fund transfers considering the upcoming move to the new stadium and the crunch that would be causing on their finances.

    Losing Moyes could make them go backwards…

    Everton won’t catch Liverpool because they have a harder fixture list remaining first and foremost. Away to Arsenal and at home to Utd will curtail any pretensions they had of making that fourth place. Whether they can attract the calibre of player required to take them to ‘the next level’ this summer remains to be seen. Even if they were to have those all important ‘resources’, would they be an attractive proposition despite the lack of Champions League football. That’s the question that no doubt any potential signings will ask themselves.
