Excellent article, Steve. You're really fortunate to have established this contact in Buenos Aires. One of the worst things about being Jewish is the disintegrated families - I have relatives in Australia, the Czech Republic, Israel, Argentina and a number of other countries, but all of them are total strangers.

Frank:

Oscar and I discovered that an Amoia actually played for Boca in 1930. Of course, Oscar said he must be related to us. :-)

The story about your grandfather and uncle are common. Many Italians either went to Argentina, Brasil, Canada, Venezuela, or the USA. And I should add Australia as well in later years.

I hope that you are able to see a live game at La Bombonera, and thank you for your kind words. On our modest site, there is a link to obtain game tickets.

What a nice article Steve.

I have never been to Argentina but footage of league games there on the television shows a real passion and atmosphere that I would imagine has to be felt to be believed.

Not unlike Vicarage Road, Watford...........

Steve a very nice article and story. i have recently found a cousin via the internet, but he is in Brazil. in the early 1900's my grandfather and uncle emigrated from calabria in italy to Buenos Aires, my Grandfather then moved on to the states in 1919 and my uncle went to Brazil.
my grandfather died many years before i was born and i always held a fascination for Argentina because i knew he had lived there. this is how i discovered Boca Juniors and have loved them from a far for quite a few years now. i have gone once to La Bombonera but during the summer break so i was only saw the stadium on a tour and the museum. i hope to return soon for a match.

in response to Iqnadirshah. the blond Argentine Boca player is Martin Palermo, a Boca Idol and soon to be there leading goalscorer of all time. look him up on Wikipedia, he is one of the greats of not only Boca Juniors but Argentine Football.

Good article. Small doubt. I was watching the highlights of a recent Boca game(vs San Martin i think) and one player(with blond hair) scored two goals the first of which was a stunner. Any idea what his name is? And I'm guessing he's argentinian................

Very nice story Steve, it's truly a small world ain't it? :)
Loved your "<i>Compared to Oscar, I was born in the desert of football. He grew up in the oasis</i>" quote. Very poetic. ;)
