Berbatov’s last-day dilemma – Manchester City or Manchester United?
Manchester's that way, right?
This is stark. raving. mad. A club up the creek without a paddle where finances are concerned, the owner sells the club on the weekend and with less than 10 hours to go to the transfer window, the board are off looking to spend 30m+ (some saying at least 50m if they can get their man in) before the clock strikes 12?
If I was David Gill, I’d quietly get up and go back home. Fuck this, let City have Berbatov. If they want to pay silly money, it’s their business.
Thing is, Berbatov has tasted the false dreams once with Tottenham, he’s not going to want to have a second go at with City so he’s still likely to push for a United move, and if it goes down to the wire United can wait till the last second and drive the price down to what they’d initially offered.
Spurs need to offload Berbatov more than United need Berbatov at this point (the reasoning behind this is here).
I was thinking for the two hours that the whole thing is a rumour fueled by the takeover and the madness that is the last day of the transfer window, but it seems to be the real deal. The player’s not going to be keen to move, it doesn’t make sense on a financial level (way too rash unless they’ve planned it a week or so in advance and know what transfer fee or wages to offer) and you’re not going to get United to raise their offer this way.
Something similar started last weekend with Bayern Munich supposedly interested, but nothing came out of it, and nothing will come out of it as well. Berbatov may well rot at White Hart Lane if he doesn’t come to Old Trafford, but he’s not going to Manchester City.
And the sad thing is, I wish he does (go to City). Go for 30m, save us a packet of money and let’s get on with getting the injured players fit and playing again – they’re good enough to get us over the finishing line this season.
And if they’re offering the wages, then why not, go Berba go, go blue. And wave the Champions League goodbye.

This is crazy. It reminds me why I hate transfer windows.
You must see the guys going crazy over at redrants.
I just wish we made an attempt to get fat Ronaldo. He would have been cool while we wait on Benzema.
Must admit, this is some brilliant PR work by the new owners of city. No better way of convincing fans that they want to make the club great by sticking one up thier archrivals. I doubt they are serious about signing him though. If they were, you would have expected Hughes to ‘know’ about the transfer before it was made????
You’d rather not see a player of his quality going to a rival, but at the same time, you almost feel like if United really, really wanted to get it done that bad already, there’d have been a little more urgency up to this point.
Maybe he’s content with the players he has, or maybe he’s working on a deal quietly, and maybe at the end of the day, Berbatov still ends up signing for United.
I can tell you (from someone who works inside the corporate side of THFC) that the buzz is that Manchester City have made an official bid for Berbatov for £37m that has been accepted by Tottenham Hospurs PLC. It remains to be seen if the player accepts personal terms and it is believed to be 50/50 that he can be convinced to sign for a massive wage. Otherwise he will sign for Utd. Everyone at Tottenham want him out now and so him staying put is extremely remote. Apprently nothing has come of Bayern Munich’s interest.
He has been sold to ManCity
LMFAO @ pissed of UTD fans, by all cost he is a city player according to close contacts at thfc, this has made my day, utd unsettling our best player all summer thinking there invincable , bullying clubs, stamping there feet, well city have f***ked u up the ar se, trying to hold us to ransom over a few million quid, well I hope he puts pen to paper for city, i bet you have no back up plan either because your so smug you thought that was it done deal, i love this whole scenario ahahahahaha bihal ( secretly seeeeethinging ) red rants ( like lunatics in an aslyum ) hahahahahhahah
Nope, Correction. Hes just gone to Man Utd. It’s over. at last the sulky miserable bulgarian f**k
Berbatov would be mad even to consider going to City. He should ask Shearer, what has he won after refusing Man Utd.
If Bayern came for him, I’d understand as they are a big club, but City ouaaaagh….
lmfao Real Madrid bid 46 million euros for the Sulk , Fergies Face I would love to be a fly on the wall PMSFL
Haha, silly money? Suddenly, United are the guiding moral light fighting against big money transfer signings? Hilarious.
United supporters have generally been after Berba’s signature all summer, and are geuninely pissed off that they don’t have a finisher now, something that should be obvious considering a not-to-be named manager plays Tevez and Rooney in the midfield too much.
Don’t now try to be the good guys because City swooped in and offered more before you could. Ridiculous…

far from over, folks. so no gloating for anyone yet.
Lmfao @ Man City , Villa, Berbatov etc etc GAZUMMPED !! dont know if this is all a PR exercise but they have rattled a few cages today, this is fascinating, wright phillips a very shrewd capture, berbatov ?? 7 hours and counting who knows what will happen, oh the excitement, blue half of manc land certainly having a good chuckle while the red half are gnawing there fingernails LMFAO
yea….he’s at United. anon is right.
ahmed, we need berb’s for god’s sake look at the depth chelsea and clubs like barca and inter have…..our midfield trio of carrick, anderson, hargo and scholes scored less than 10 goals last year…none of them are good as lamp’s deco or stevie .g. in terms of goals…..if not for a striker we would be down in the dumps….b’cause we can’t rely on ronaldo alone while rooney and tevez are just support striker’s……i’ve lost sleep for past couple of days…..would david gill do a peter kenyon (aka ronaldinho)
ahmed, i am a fan of urs…but i disagree on ur views regards berb’s……i beleive we have overachieved for the last two season’s and i hate to admit we have become a 1 man team in attack…our attack’s have revolved around ronaldo long enough for god’s sake….anderson was brought in as a support striker….now he is a holding midfielder and has scored just once(penalty) in 30 odd appearences…scholes scored just 1 goal last season and carrick and hargo just a couple….this season is the real test for our team as inevitably there would be a slight dip in ronaldo’s form(i think he is human) and i find none to take up his mantle…..even if we employe him as a striker we should have bought someone in the mould of van der vaart(a great bargain for real) or a talented youngster like micheal johnson…..we have rested on our laurels too much….saha is gone so is atleat 10 goals this season…….i am preplexed with our transfer policy plz camment
Brian,
As much as I appreciate the vote in confidence I dont speak for all United fans. I’ve been saying all summer that 30m+ is too much for Berbatov, so yea, that’s silly money to me.
But if City have it and can convince Berba to move to Eastlands, more power to them. Like I said, he should go if they’re offering that much money.
ashwin,
you’ll find yourself disagreeing with me on a lot of things. Time will tell.
Karl,
I’ve tried to stay away from other fans so as not to get caught up in everything.
ahmed,
i agree that 30 million is too much for berb’s but this is the last day of the window….i dont know wat the hell gill was doing all these 3 months leaving the last day for his lone acquisition….if 30m was too much we shold have work’d on other possibilities all along….spurs seems to have got one on us….yes, i agree berb’s is’nt assured 100% starting role right away every game so 30mill seems absurd…if we would have worked more on our options we could have ended up with someone like pavulechenko ….who fits the bill as a target man….or someone like gomis..or even terzeguet as a short term solution atleast….for all our glorious campaigns i for one remain very critical of our transfers especially the astronimical sums we shell out for a player and the player’s we miss out on(aka essien, menez , djovetic, ronaldinho) and the craps we offload them ( becks , RVN , heinze)
tevez hav been very impressive 4rm supercop…but heaven knows we need a point man..rooney has turn blunt and cant even shoot anymore…we are about offloading another good stuff campbell for E7mill..god help us this season
All we need is Rooney learning what role a striker takes. Let the midfield do their job and maybe fall back only a few times a game. I respect Rooney’s devotion to the club and the feeling the need to help out everywhere on the pitch to lead the team, but if he could just learn how to stay up front and score that would be great. Scholes flick over the defense to him last year was perfection from him. He can get the ball to Rooney if he stays up. If he can do that then we have a great striker back in the squad. Give him back number 8 and let him run up front.
Rooney can’t beat the keeper either. If he could, he’d have scored more regardless of where he was on the pitch…
Apparently it’s almost done. Levy could cock it up, and that would be hilarious if he does, given how little time Berbatov has to go to City…
