Michael Owen as the striker. Control the middle of the field and spread the ball to the springing wing backs for crosses into the area. They played Barry and Lamps in the centre yesterday. i think Gerrard and Barry will be good esp so if they are together in Anfield. next month's qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia cannot be an experiment match. 10 days to the former and the latter an acid test which McClaren failed. playing at home they should play a 4-4-2, but who to play on the centre? Joe Cole should play in the centre of midfield with Gerrard as it's already been established that Lampard and Gerrard do not work and Gerrard is a more complete player. Ahmed Bilal's idea of a 4-5-1 would also be good if they had a clinical finisher like Torres or Drogba or Tevez up front but Rooney is more of a target man/workhorse and they need to play someone else alongside him as he is too good and has too much of an impression on a game to get dropped.I think Dean Ashton should play up front with Rooney as he seems to have found his form and fitness again but I don't know if he is in the squad?
