Bentley v Beckham – which David would you pick for England?

Written by Ahmed Bilal

David or David?

England play the Czech Republic today in their last ‘friendly’ before the World Cup 2010 qualifiers begin.

The time for experimentation is over and the team you’ll see lining up for England tonight will in all likelihood be 80-90 percent the same as the one set to line up against Andorra and Croatia in September (see all England qualifying fixtures here).

You know the players – if you were Fabio Capello, who would you pick as the right-sided midfielder for England tonight: David Beckham or David Bentley?

Tell us who and why in the comments.

    Bentley.

Beckham as maybe a sub or a friendly.

But tonight, do start Bentley, he has speed which Becks currently is losing, and his crosses and FK are quite good as a number of club occasions he was the first choice taker, eg Spurs!

He also can lead as he had captained for England’s youth.

Downing can play on the left

I must admit its a tough one. Its clear Beckham’s still passionate for England and his experience on the right along with his range of passing is a great asset to England.

Between the two i’d rather see Bentley because he has better movement and more flair, if I was in Capello’s shoes id give Ashley Young the go ahead.

uve got to be looking at the future now so i’d defo say bentley.he plays week in week out in the best league in the world, beckhams a legend but his time for the national team must surely be coming to an end.

  4. I think now is about the time to start playing Bently but I don’t think that we should write off Beckham forever. I think Joe Cole should play on the left aswell, I just think he is better than Downing or Young.

  5. Beckham for sure. He’s proven himself, and England has shown they can’t win without him. Look at the mess they had when he was cut from the England squad

Beckham with zero doubt. He can get it done at the highest levels. Depending on the score, possibly bring Bentley in at 70min.

  7. I think they should play both in a 5-man midfield with Gerrard, Lampard and Joe Cole – get 5 guys sitting in the middle and pass the ball around them until Rooney gets pissed and goes on a run, springing the offside trap in the process…

    no one?

    Beckham, Beckham, Beckham!!!!

He’s a better player and a better person and he has more passion about playing for england

P.S Don’t forget bently is a player who refused to play for the under 21’s because he was tired the rest of the team didn’t need that rest and most of them were first teamers for their club (obviously he’s really proud to wear the shirt)

  9. I can’t see Beckham being part of this team in 2010.

Bentley, Gerrard, Cole, Barry/Hargreaves for me. England always struggle with one up front. They need genuine width supplied by the fullbacks anyway. Cole is wasted on the left but who else can do it?

Is Ashley Young in the squad?

Who is starting up front? Rooney and Defoe?

Who will start in goal? Jamo or Robbo?

James – Brown Terry Ferdinand A Cole – Bentley Gerrard Lampard Cole – Defoe Rooney

Lampard and Barry have been very poor tonight.

So was gerrard when he placed on the Left of midfield, when Barry could have played there.

Becks started, and by half-time Heskey came on for Defoe, for fcuk? two SS upfront?

    FYI, Hargo is injured.

To be honest, I still think that Becks is better but it is time to think ahead so Bentley.
Joe Cole should play in the centre of midfield with Gerrard as it’s already been established that Lampard and Gerrard do not work and Gerrard is a more complete player.
Ahmed Bilal’s idea of a 4-5-1 would also be good if they had a clinical finisher like Torres or Drogba or Tevez up front but Rooney is more of a target man/workhorse and they need to play someone else alongside him as he is too good and has too much of an impression on a game to get dropped.I think Dean Ashton should play up front with Rooney as he seems to have found his form and fitness again but I don’t know if he is in the squad?
On the left side I wouldn’t mind seeing either Downing or Ashley Young but I think Downing would probably be better if Bentley gets picked ahead of Becks (the supreme crosser) as Downing is a better crosser of the ball than Ashley Young is.

is better 4 him 2 quit now look at rikard he was 1 of the best coach in the world he resign at D age of 29 if am nt making mistake so this is the time 2 resign and stat coaching or model

  17. 21/08/2008 Manager

playing at home they should play a 4-4-2, but who to play on the centre? They played Barry and Lamps in the centre yesterday. i think Gerrard and Barry will be good esp so if they are together in Anfield.

next month’s qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia cannot be an experiment match.

10 days to the former and the latter an acid test which McClaren failed.

I would play 3 centre defenders, 2 wing backs, 2 holding middys, 2 centre forwards, and 1 striker.

David James in goal. Rio, Terry, Brown in centre defense. Ashley Cole and Joe Cole as the wing backs. Carrick and Hargreaves as the holding middys. Rooney and Gerrard at centre forward. Michael Owen as the striker.

Control the middle of the field and spread the ball to the springing wing backs for crosses into the area.

  19. I would play
    James

    Brown – Ferdinand – Terry – Cole

    Beckham- Hargreaves – Gerrard – J.Cole

    Owen – Rooney

  20. james

    johnson ferdinand terry cole

    carrick

    beckham lampard gerrard j.cole

    rooney
