I’m a big Fletcher fan and disappointed for him, it was a wrong decision. That said, when it happened my heart was in my mouth as I didn’t see who it was and thought it may have been Vidic or Rio. They would have been a much bigger loss.

Not quite true in my opinion. Fletcher, like many of the other Utd players, is a key member of the squad. The beauty of that squad is that, in many cases, players can be interchanged with little impact on the quality of the team.

Fletcher has started 34 of Utd’s 60 games this season and played 8 out of 12 in the CL (he only played 1 leg against Inter and Porto). It’s a real shame for him but I don’t think it will have any real impact on Utd in the final.

I have to admit, when I first saw it on TV I was gutted, because I thought that it was a penalty and, being a penalty, has to be a red.

Often a tackle is so good it appears impossible to have been made without comitting a foul, which is probably what happened here.

UEFA not having an appeals process however is gutting for the lad.

Even if the referee gave the penalty on what he saw (and from his angle there’s a fair chance he saw a penalty), the card was at his discretion – a yellow could have been just as good given the circumstances.

Sometimes the spirit of the law and the game should also be considered, no?
