Barcelona have been linked with several top defenders this summer. The Catalan giants are desperately looking to sign a proper centre-back, who is expected to fill the void left by club legend Carles Puyol.

Over the last couple of months, Barcelona have been linked with the defenders like Marquinhos, Danniel Agger, Mats Hummels, Jan Vertonghen, Daley Blind and others. However, it seems their search for a new centre-back is over. According to latest reports from Sky Sports, the Blaugrana have made a formal approach to sign Arsenal defender Thomas Veramelen, who is also a reported target of Manchester United.

Vermalen’s future at the Emirates has been well speculated in the media, as the Belgian having entered the final year of his contract. Plus, he was no longer the first choice at the club, with Wenger preferring the trusted duo of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny last season.

Furthermore, Wenger himself had claimed last week that he can’t guarantee Vermaelen regular first team actions that fuelled further speculations on his future.

Barcelona have now stepped up their interest with a £10m bid for the former Ajax defender. Arsenal won’t be willing to sell any of their players to a rival Premier League club, therefore a move to Spain is highly possible.

Vermaelen would accept such offers gleefully as it represents a golden opportunity for him to represent one of the biggest clubs in the world.
