@Red half of Manchester
No one is suggesting that Barcelona will out right lose the title (my personal hope is that they don't). But they've already started treading on that slippery slope that could lead to that result. The point of the article was simply to point out that history has shown (for Barcelona and elsewhere) it's possible, even with such a commanding advantage, to lose the title. It's happened where Barça have benefitted (1990-91, 91-92) and where they have been on the unfortunate end (the 1999-2000 season). And I couldn't help drawing comparisons to Newcastle Utd. Simply that.

This is pathetic, for pete' sake so what if barca have dropped a few points, everyone drops points and you cant expect teams to win forever. teams have their ups and downs and although this makes the title chase a lot more interesting than before, I still expect Barca to win.

I hate to admit it but it's not looking great for Barca as of lately. And again I think most of the blame has be placed for the most part on E'too. Everything was working wonderfully until he started commenting that Mallorca was the team he loves and that Barca was only the team he works for. I think is perhaps time to moved on without E'too... if he loves Mallorca so much perhaps he wont mind playing for peanuts there!

@Bobmagee
Assuming Barça can manage a win against Lyon. Couple of weeks ago I would have said hands down Barça would get past (I even posted it on Victor Li's prediction article that you can read here on this site for the Round of 16 matches). But it's a bit premature to start thinking about Man Utd-Barcelona when Lyon still stand in the way of Barcelona and getting out of this hole.

In the champions league, I honestly believe that Man United are the only team that can beat Barca over 2 legs, Firstly - they did it last year (playing on the break I know, but they were quite comfortable) and secondly they have the only defense, provided its fully fit, that can stop a team of Barcelona's attacking prowess but United also have the attacking players which can hurt them too. Who else in Europe, or indeed the world, can say that?

what happened the last time barca slipped up like this? everyone says they have no shot, and they take 58 of the next 60 points in the league. Madrid will be playing catch up once again

Certainly the tables have turned. Back in November, people were questioning whether Man Utd's participation in the World Club Championship in Tokyo would derail their aspirations in Europe and the league, but it seems that Utd are going from strength to strength (even with their starting defenders suspended or injured) whereas Barça's defense has gone AWOL. And BD Condell points out something I didn't really touch on about Newcastle circa 95-96. Their defense was culprit despite great attacking players such as Ginola, Beardsley, Ferdinand and later Tino Asprilla. While we can all point to the triumverate of Henry, Eto'o and Messi, if Barça's defending continues in its amateur form, it could be just like the 99-00 season where they were in contention for everything and ended with nothing.

Barca's decline is a big surprise. However, I do recall a couple of months back, when all and sundry were raving about Barca and declaring them as certainties for La Liga and almost certainties for the CL, questioning whether they may have peaked too early.

Timing is everything and trophies aren't won in November/December. But I still wouldn't bet against them rallying. Their attack is outstanding but, as you point out with the Newcastle collapse also, it's defence that really counts when the heat is on.

That's where Utd have the advantage.
