Neil Jones

Right, where to start? My name is Neil Jones, I'm 23 years old and from Liverpool- therefore I'm a Liverpool F.C. supporter. I have been writing football related bits and bobs for as long as I can remember. It was a massive ambition of mine right the way through school to be a sports writer, until the smell of money distracted me from University at 18! But now I'm determined to give it another go, starting from now! I guess I find it easy to write about something I seem to spend most my life talking/thinking/reading about, and have an awful lot of passion for. Hope you enjoy reading my pieces, and don't be afraid to cut me down if you disagree with my opinions. After all, that's what football is all about isn't it?

When Bulgaria (almost) ruled the world

Stoichkov takes Bulgaria to the 1994 semis

The Parc des Princes, November 1993. France are seconds away from securing qualification for the 1994 World Cup, albeit nervously. Tied at 1-1 with Group rivals Bulgaria, they know a point is enough to send them to America the following summer. In possession is David Ginola, as enigmatic, stylish and confident then as he would…

Love and football. It hurts.

Love and football. It hurts.

Del Amitri and football are not something that usually mix. Certainly not with any success, anyway (see this example of World Cup pessimism for details). But whilst musing over Michael Owen’s “Eastenders-end-scene” switch to Manchester United this weekend, it was hard to ignore one of Justin Currie’s lyrics. “It’s hard to say you love someone,…

Terry to swap Chelsea for Manchester City? Stranger things have happened.

John Terry - Mr Chelsea - to leave?

Mark Hughes was talking again this morning. Talking big as well. According to Hughes, Manchester City’s financial muscle is starting to cause ripples amongst the previously-complacent “Big Four”, and his side are in a position to upset the proverbial apple cart. “United are taking our situation more seriously in terms of what we can do…

Beware! Manchester United set to go Brazilian

Douglas Costa to Manchester United?

A strange lull has fallen over the Premier League at the moment. Almost eerie. I can feel it, and I know a lot of my fellow Liverpudlians can too. Blame Real Madrid I suppose. And Carlos Tévez. If it wasn’t for that amalgamation of characters, chancers and crackpots, we wouldn’t have this feeling. This fear…

Stuart Taylor – the ultimate backup keeper

Stuart Taylor - aiming for the City bench

It looked like it might be a quiet day at the office for Manchester City didn’t it? After the Big Brotheresque saga of Roque Santa Cruz’s drawn out switch to Eastlands from Blackburn, it looked like Mark Hughes and his henchmen might just have a few days to contemplate their next move. And refill their…

Who are you: Thomas Vermaelen?

Thomas Vermaelen

So Arsène Wenger has done it again. Not content with making one big money, straight-to-first-team signing this year, he has gone and produced another. The need for a new centre half at the Emirates has been well documented (and slightly exaggerated if you ask me) of late, with Kolo Touré’s alarming loss of form, William…

Have boots will travel – The Great Real Madrid reshuffle

Making space for the Galacticos

Florentino Pérez doesn’t do things by halves. Neither do Real Madrid. For most clubs, a season finishing second only to a magisterial Barcelona side in La Liga, and suffering an (admittedly humiliating) exit in the Champions League to a side as well-equipped as Liverpool would register as decent. Disappointing at worst. For Real however it…

Loyalty in football is over-rated

Loyalty in football is over-rated

I woke up this morning with a headache. Not for the first time, not for the last. My alarm seemed to ring about ten minutes after I had clambered into bed ready for a good night’s sleep. I had a dull day of work ahead of me, with a fusion of people I can tolerate,…

The transfer merry-go-round- somebody make it stop!

The transfer merry-go-round- somebody make it stop!

In life there are only a handful of things that are certain. You will watch Big Brother. It will irritate you. MPs will lie through their back teeth (and their front ones). Summer does make girls more attractive. And makes you feel less so. People who ring in radio stations with traffic updates are idiots….

Barca rule Europe, and have done it their way

Barca rule Europe, and have done it their way

For nine minutes, I was smug and self-satisfied, as well as disappointed. My pre-match predictions were being played out in front of my eyes; the men in all-white were on top, and the Catalans were struggling to adapt to the intensity of their play. Victor Valdes had taken just thirty seconds to nervously prod a…
