Wenger admits he tried to sign Chelsea target who has potential to win Ballon d’Or

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that the Gunners did try to sign Paul Pogba in the summer of 2012.

The 21-year-old was one of the emerging players from Manchester United’s youth setup and he was eyeing for a regular place in the Red Devils’ starting lineup. However, the French international refused to sign a new deal and left Old Trafford on a free transfer.

Before leaving United, Pogba had already attracted interest from several clubs across Europe and Wenger confirmed his side were keen on securing his services. Unfortunate for Arsenal and the Frenchman that his compatriot joined Juventus on a free transfer.

Wenger believes Pogba has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or in the future.

“As a footballer, he (Pogba) has everything. It is difficult to figure out what he doesn’t have. Things happened very quickly. We were interested in him. We tried to get him to come here. But he very quickly signed for Juventus. He has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or,” Wenger said.

Pogba has already excelled for the Serie A winners, having won two league titles in his first two seasons with the Turin club. Pogba’s form has seen him being linked with a move to Chelsea, who are keen on bringing him back to the Premier League. His former club United are also in the frame.

However, recently the French midfielder signed a new deal and despite agreeing to extend his stay with Juventus, a huge offer could tempt the Old Lady to part ways with their star midfielder.
