Arsenal’s good form, thoughts on Ade, Fab and Henry
It’s always nice to get a clean sheet and score several goals, no matter who the opposition. This is nothing to get excited about however, for it was only Derby, albeit a Derby side who managed to somehow beat Newcastle in their last match.
Still, away from home they’ve already lost heavily to both Tottenham and Liverpool. There is no question that we always should have been gunning to add more misery to Derby’s surely relegation bound season and we did just that. It was a good result, a good performance but let’s not overreact here, Arsenal played Derby, not Man Utd.
Also something to point out: four of our six league wins have been at home. Away, we beat Tottenham and drew to Blackburn (though you have Lehmann to thank for that.) We’ve played some strong teams but we’ve had it a bit easy in terms of home games so bare that in mind. Next week Arsenal travel to Upton Park to do battle with an in form West Ham and that won’t be easy.
Adebayor continued his goal scoring form with a hat-trick. For the record, I’ve always thought Ade an important player for us, even last season when he had his share of the critics. He wasn’t just a half decent third choice striker, he added something different to our game and was a hardworking physical presence up front. He just wasn’t the best finisher or rather, lacked the composure to put the ball in the back of the net. Composure’s largely a confidence thing and now everybody’s favorite Togo striker has found the net several times his confidence has shot up. That’s the real bonus I saw we were going to get out of this game. Confidence.
One player lacking in confidence is Theo Walcott. Not lacking in ability, nor potential, but in confidence. He’s showed he’s capable of making some excellent runs, combining some dazzling dribbling with lightning pace but at the moment there’s no end product to his game. That’s a lack of confidence. Theo really needs a goal or two to find his form and he will do, eventually. I have faith in him anyway and I think Le Boss does too.
Diaby put in a better performance on the wing than we’re accustomed to, scoring a cracker to get off the mark for Arsenal with his first goal, of what I hope will be many. Wenger explained post match that the change in performance was due to him not having been playing much. He claimed the same is true of Walcott and that his poor performance was due to not having played much recently and maybe we’ll see a better Walcott in his next performance, which I expect will be in the week against Newcastle in the Carling Cup. Wenger’s usually right so that’s good.
Fabregas scored again, showing just what a phenomenal player he now is. And he’ll only get better with age and experience. I fully expect him to be up there competing with Lionel Messi for World Footballer of The Year gongs in the future. I also fully expect a battle to keep Cesc at Arsenal for I fear now he’s become this good, Madrid and Barca will come calling. Not that he has any reason to go, especially if we prove ourselves as title challengers once again. The only way is up for us and Fabregas is one of the players at the heart of that.
So a good result then and a strong performance against a not so strong Derby. It’s expected to be honest but it’s good that we’re living up to expectations. It’s good that we’re scoring as well. Last season we couldn’t find the net. It’s a problem we’ve rectified, with goal scoring responsibly now being shared across the squad as opposed to relying on Thierry Henry, who might I add I saw for the first time tonight in another club‘s shirt – Barcelona’s. He missed a sitter and was unlucky with another, finding the post but he looks a shadow of the player he once was and I don’t think it’s merely because he’s adjusting to a new team and is still ‘finding his feet.’ He’s still good, with something to offer but no longer is he the Henry of old, mainly because he’s beginning to lose that frightening pace he once possessed.
Arsenal were right to sell, something I felt at the time and something I continue to feel, more so now that the team seems to be performing better in his absence.

Spot on mate………..
Nice all round article. Highlighted all the important points except for the fact you didn’t mention RVP. I’ve said it before in other sections of this website & i’ll say it here. RVP is another player who needs to get his confidence back again. So far the opposition have managed to do a good job of stifling him & not giving him enough space to make his runs down the right or the centre as he usually does. I’ll reiterate: once he starts scoring i think Arsenal will be unstoppable. Right now a lot of our goals have come from all around the field but in terms of consistency i think there is no one better than Van Persie.
Don’t think i’ve overlooked how good Adebayor has become. I regard his performance against Spurs as much more important than the one against Derby. Its true that he’s showing signs of Henry’s finishing ability, but Henry himself acknowledges that Van Persie is far more skillful than anyone else he knows (including himself!), and that’s saying something coming from the greatest striker (my opinion) in the world.
So lets all hope that RVP finds his feet again because when he does, God help the opposition.
Its a deep team, too. Cesc goes off, after showing early on his vision and accuracy by springing Ade for a goal. What does Denilson do as his replacement? The exact same thing.
Spiral,
RVP is a very, very good player. I am Dutch so I saw him play at Feyenoord. When you hear him talk, he is very confident and very mature. He just missed that form and a little bit of luck. His actions dont always go as he wants and then he gets frustrated and cant get back on his feet..
Once he gets his form back, Arsenal will be unstoppable.
Another player, Hleb, is doing very well too. It’s weird no one mentions him, because he was brilliant in the games we played so far. He didnt play versus Derby, but he deservs some credit. His technique and passing is world class and if he can improve the final ball just a little bit he can score 10 goals a season, and give at least 20 assists.
Yes, RVP, that’s a point. For the record, I agree. He had a very impressive preseason and he hasn’t managed to continue that form so far. He’s looked a bit anonymous you might say. It’s a confidence thing again, even in players as confidence as he, you don’t score for a couple of games and you’re in need of a goal. I’ve no doubt he’ll be back scoring and producing magic before long.
Great article, spot on. I hope Fabregas isn’t sold, to Barca, or those prick nazis Real!
The thing about RVP is that he is a different player from Ade in that he prefers to run with the ball, get it onto his left foot and then blast it rather than wait around for a through ball or air ball like Ade likes to do. Though he does have an accurate tap(as witnessed against Seville and Man u last season) which is guaranteed to hit the top net, he prefers to do it with his favourite left foot. But credit him as he has not been desperate to score just because all his team mates are scoring. He hasnt done any stupid acts out of frustration and that shows maturity. One of these days he will get a little extra space and then it will start……………
I’m betting he’ll get a brace against West Ham next match. One can only hope, right?
Same here. Why only hope? He can do it and should too. Arsenal’s yearly figures are out and we are second only to Real Madrid and with respect to profits, are actually ahead of them. Arsene has been promised around 70 million in the January transfer window. But i sincerely doubt whether he’ll buy anyone…………
yeah..in terms of profit making,i sincerely doubt any team could beat arsenal..3.1mil from each games is hell a lot!And as an Arsenal fan,you feel comfortable as Arsenal practically can score anytime of the day.Just wishing RVP find his form quickly cause i started to miss he on the score sheet..
i luv the way arsenal players er really playing this days now. tell them that they should keep it up men. you know what, i ve ben an arsenal fan for a long time and i will still remain an arsenal fan forever if arsenal is still existing and i know they keep on existing for life. for your imformation arsenal has the highest fans in Nigeria and no one will rate them down at all. you may give me the feed back in my mail i always on line.

fatai(a.k.a.faaty)
I’m from India faaty. Keep up the good work. It was a good performance against a full strenth Newcastle side. Bendtner scored a good header and Denilson scored off a killer volley. Fabiansky looked good though he messed up on one move which thankfully was covered up by Senderos. Onto Upton Park next………..
Spiral
It’ll be a neck brace once Lucas Neill has finished with him.
[only joking... I like the Arsenal team... just hope you have your first off-day on Saturday for West Ham's sake but I can't see it happening sadly. 4 v 2 to the Arsenal]
Fifth Column – All jokes aside i still think West Ham will be serious opposition for Arsenal this weekend. People might not rate Curbishley a lot but i’m surprised how they got over their first match defeat & have turned the tide. Plus now you got Ljungberg in your side & he knows the Arsenal playbook inside-out. Only question is if he can keep up with the young-uns anymore.
Oh yeah! 3 cheers for Senderos for his magnificent save the other night!

REVENGE! (just pray that it happens…………)
Its interesting to me how we as fans still have jitters when Arsenal plays teams like West Ham. Must be a REAL bad hangover from last season! Here’s hoping we don’t have another such hangover for next season.
