Hill-Wood should learn to shut up!!

Written by Norman

Peter Hill-Wood, Arsenal Chairman

Since all the takeover news broke with Kroenke buying up Arsenal’s shares I have kind of not really worried too much about the whole thing. For me, what happens, happens. Arsenal will survive and thrive! The one thing I really didn’t like though was Dein being forced to leave Arsenal. The man that has brought so much success to the club, namely Wenger.

Peter Hill-Wood has always been at Arsenal but you rarely heard him speak and you almost forgot that he was the Chairman. Now since everything happened the guy is constantly in the news and from what I have learned of this guy in just 1 month scares the living shit out of me.

If you own/run a successful business of any kind you want to know the people who are investing into it. You don’t want some mobster investing money and potentially risking your future and that of your family. So you make a point of getting to know that person immediately!

If you own less than 1% of the company and from no where someone buys 12% then he is affectively a bigger share holder than you. Show some respect and don’t mouth off to the press and effectively insult and humiliate this person.

Here is my biggest problem though. Here is an article run in the Guardian about an upcoming meeting between Hill-Wood and Kroenke and the chairman’s comments about the future of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal:

Hill-Wood also denied reports that Arsène Wenger is considering quitting the club in protest at Dein’s departure, continuing: “I wasn’t at Portsmouth for the last game of the season, but I’ve spoken to colleagues who were and they had a chat with (Wenger) and said he seemed very happy.”

They say? Really, they say! Seemed? Hill-Wood should be doing everything in his power to ensure Wenger stays at Arsenal beyond his contract. He should not be relying on reports from people who have people close to the source! I get a very bad feeling about this guy. He is constantly saying the wrong things in the media and if the board feel they are more than able to run the club going forward then its time to put their money where their mouths are.

  1. From a non-Arsenal perspective, Hill-Wood’s comments about Kroenke, when he said that Kroenke knew “FA about our football” and that “we don’t want his kind here” are not becoming of the Arsenal chairman, especially when the man in discussion is the owner of another football club that Arsenal are connected to for marketing and footballing reasons.

  2. Regardless of what you think, Peter Hill-Wood is the chairman and as such is allowed to mouth off as much as he likes. It doesn’t matter if Kranky owns 12% of the club, the chairman has a bigger role to play at the club than he does at the moment.

So no, Peter Hill-Wood doesn’t have to shut up, quite the opposite. We don’t want some random yank buying our club and putting it into more debt, to use Hill-Wood’s words - we don’t need his sort.

  3. I’m a yank and I don’t want Kroenke or anyone else taking over the club…one quote you don’t share is Hill-wood’s comment that he and the other board members aren’t in it for the money. I love that attitude.

Kroenke is a business man, he married into walmart money for godsakes, and he will want to take money out of the club. Just like the Glazers at Man U and George Bush’s buddies at Liverpool.

Keep it up Peter and keep Arsenal as it is.

  4. How do we know ‘Kranky’ taking over would put us in more debt? There doesn’t seem to be any reason to support PHW’s comments and he certainly doesn’t seem to ever say anything positive. Norman is also right that he should be courting Wenger to extend his stay, not taking the word of other people about his disposition. PHW is an idiot.

  5. Peter Hill wood has been director of Arsenal for decades now, and has helped ensure the smooth running of the football club long before David Dein was there. His family have protected the clubs values and financial stability for years, his views deserve some respect.

Seeing as though he is not the only one on the board who seems hostile to a takeover i.e Fizmann and Bracewell-Smith, he is clealy not a lone voice on the matter. The OP syas he had ‘a very bad feeling about this guy’, yet he has helped ensure the smooth running and financial stability of the football club, long before Kronke was involved or mentioned. The OP didn’t have any of these bad feelings during the success in the late nineties and 2001, only now.

  6. “Peter Hill-Wood has always been at Arsenal but you rarely heard him speak and you almost forgot that he was the Chairman. Now since everything happened the guy is constantly in the news and from what I have learned of this guy in just 1 month scares the living shit out of me.”

Have you had your head buried in the sand for the last 20 years, Norman?

And if you’re not worried about the takeover then I suggest you do some reading and see what it would mean to Arsenal before you write more ill-informed crap like this.

  7. What a great chairman we have. Sold his shares to Dein the minute he got his hands on them, after his father’s death & doesn’t bother attending games. You can see the club mean so much to him, or is it the 60k a year he gets for sitting on his arse & doing nothing.

  8. Your article misses the main point - Hill-Wood is quite right to say that the Club neither needs nor wants a debt-leveraged buy-out.
And what money are you asking the board to put up? Your comment doesn’t make any sense.
Clearly you haven’t understood the mechanics of Kroenke’s attempted take-over and of David Deins treacherous involvement in it.

  9. Why don’t you learn to shut up? PH-W is more interested in protecting the club than Kroenke. Kroenke will only be interested in one thing, banking profits. PH-W and the rest of the directors has never taken money out of the club ever in dividend payments. And what he accomplished with Fiszman to build Ashburton Grove is a great thing that will make the club more competitive into the future. And what did Dein want to do? He wanted a ground share with the FA for Wembley. Can you imagine Arsenal without their own ground? That would have been an embarassment and a disaster. While PH-W may have said some impolitic things that I am sure he would have wished to have taken back, he and his family have done more for Arsenal than you will ever know or understand.

As for Norman and bob, how do you think this dude is going to buy the club? Direct deposit from his checking account? Clearly it is going to be a leveraged buyout, same model as Utd and Pool. And you have to add that debt to our stadium debt and then ask if the current stadium debt hurts our ability in the short term to buy big, how will an extra £500m help our competitiveness? Once the property development is completed at the old Highbury, the club is going to have a lot of extra money to spend.

Norman, I suggest before you write, think about what you are writing, because this was total crap.

    spot on redtop
this board and chairmen dont care about The Arsenal
all they care for is there corporate buddies and getting a fat pay cheque at the end of the year.
after all that is why the emirates stadium was built.
not for the normal fans, but for the prawn munchers etc etc etc.hence the highest priced seats and season tickets..
in 10 years time 60000 capicity will be below the 80000+ of manure liverpool and even the geordies, then we will be in the same position as highbury!!!
but we can all be on a waiting list paying 30 to 40£ every year!!
as to “we don’t want his sort”
is hill wood not married to an american with a american/english son?
GET OUT NOW And take fiszman ,bracewell smith etc with you before its too late!!

PHW was spot on with his comments. It was from the heart of a true blue supporter, first and foremost.
As a life long supporter of ARSENAL, I cannot see how that American will benefit the club (read Frizman’s earlier comments).
All the talk about Arsene joining Dein on the sidelines just because of frienship, is pure crap. ARSENE LOVES ARSENAL MORE.

  13. What was said above has nothing to do with the supposed takeover being positive or negative. It has everything to do with the untactful comments PHW continues to make in the press. As Arsenal fans we are in a stage of uncertainty. Will the club fall into foreign hands? yes? no? Will the current board be able to ensure a continous stream of entertaining sides to fill the new stadium week in week out? Well I dont know about the rest of you but those uncertainties demand reasurance. What we need is the Chairman to come out and say something positive not that he thinks our manager is happy because somebody else had a chat with him. If you cant see that then it is you I pity.

  14. Utter, utter cobblers.

Arsenal should worry more about the director of football role, rather than who’s taking over. David dein was loved by some and hated by others BUT the fact is he was a true gooner, he did the best for his club, gooners should worry about the man who comes in to replace him…will he have the same passion and drive that dein offered and also dein knew the board members for a long time therefore he had a better understanding of what was acceptable and what wasnt when it came to transfers and new contracts for players.

I dnt really care about Peter Hill Wood and his comments as long as it doesnt effect the players and most importantly the boss.
