Arsenal are likely to sign a central defensive midfielder in the January transfer window, following a knee injury to Francis Coquelin.

The 24-year-old French midfielder was ruled out for at least two months after suffering a knee injury against West Brom on Saturday.

Coquelin has been one of the key players for Arsenal this season, and his loss is a huge blow for the Gunners. His absence will force Arsene Wenger to search for a replacement as soon as the window re-opens in January.

Lucas Biglia has been a long term target of Arsenal, but according to Gazzetta World, the Gunners are unlikely to make a move for the Lazio midfielder.

The Argentine midfielder has been an epitome of consistency for Lazio since joining the Italian club in 2013.

He has no shortage of admirers in Europe and continues to get linked with big European clubs in almost every transfer window.

Manchester United tried their luck in signing him during the January transfer window.

The Red Devils had reportedly submitted a bid in the region of €25m, but their offer was rebuffed. Lazio President Claudio Lotito later confirmed that the Serie A club had turned down an offer for the midfielder as it was way below their valuation of the player, thought to be around €40m.

Biglia has been in good form this season, scoring four goals in 10 appearances for Lazio. However, Arsenal are skeptical over signing him given he is 29, and has a little re-sale value.

Wenger usually likes to spend money on younger players with a high re-sale value, therefore, any potential move for Biglia in the January transfer window is highly unlikely.

Arsenal possibly will make a move for either of Sporting’s William Carvalho, Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender or Sevilla’s Grzegorz Krychowiak as the Gunners look to reinforce their midfield.
