Arsenal: Twitter reacts to Mesut Ozil’s performance

Arsenal returned to the Premier League summit tonight with a narrow 2-1 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Mesut Ozil set up the first goal for the Gunners, but his performance was under intense scrutiny today after a series of hit-and-miss displays of late.

The German slid a lovely pass through for Jack Wilshere to open the scoring after 34 minutes, with the England international finishing well with his left foot.

Arsenal doubled their lead only a minute later when Olivier Giroud swept home after controlling a Jack Wilshere through ball.

Villa rarely threatened until Christian Benteke met a terrific Matthew Lowton cross with a diving header to put his side back in contention.

But it never looked like being the catalyst for a famous comeback, as Arsenal saw the game out with relative ease, and earned yet another three points, as they continue their march towards a first Premier League title for a decade.

Mesut Ozil was at the centre of many Twitter debates throughout the match, with Arsenal fans and despisers alike airing their views on the £42m summer signing, with the general consensus being that once more he failed to reach the lofty heights expected of him.

What do you think? Does Ozil deserve the criticism? Let me know in the comments below…

  1. Mesut is still adjusting. Believe me, he will get much better. I think mesut has the potential to become the best midfield maestro in the premiere league.

  2. People think Ozil is the type of player to dribble through three defenders, rounds the keeper then scores. Truth is, as long as he creates those chances when he can, assist atleast a goal each match then I’m so satisfied!

  3. I believe numbers never lie? Mesut created 3 chances at Villa Park on Monday night second only to Lowton of Villa who had a largely influential second half. People expect Mesut to run at players and score as many goals as Eden Hazard, it appears Arsenal supporters are unaware of his best quality which is starting phases of play in possession. Yes Mesut could perhaps take more initiative in terms of being a goal scoring threat, but his contribution towards kicking off Arsenal’s attacks is invaluable and Jack Wilshere benefited from that with the first goal. From the moment Mesut slid the ball through for Monreal the Villa defence was in tatters, and that is what Ozil can do for you.

  4. Give him credits instead of criticizing him. I am glad the manager and the team can see his importance at the team. I am disappointed how you guys reacts on oziil. If he doesn’t score I’d either he assist but for you is nothing. I am getting irritated of your critics every match he plays. He can’t expect him to play even players . Let face the reality. He is human bring think of your self if someone can do this to you .

  5. Ozil has dedication of a fighting bull. He may seem of the ball at times but never loses a change when given to fight back. Back this Great player for our Gunners.

  6. These dumbass british fans have to understand ozil isn’t a dominating midfield player. He is a player who like you saw with the first goal provides an amazing ball to set up the play and end in a goal. He isn’t a Hazard to run around the whole park, he is a player whose movement off the ball is great. No one seems to notice the small touches that opens the defense or the way he slows the game down in pressure situations. If you want a midfield player who hogs the ball while you watch with potato chips go follow someone else.

  7. Ozil is just adapting the premier league style, give some time, his going be star player in the team, just watch and see, his going make sure arsenal FC win lot of trophies

  8. Don’t give up ozil because his going to make arsenal win a lot trophies in long term, the same way he made Real Madrid top the league
