Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has seen himself go from first-choice to third-choice in less than a year’s time at the Emirates. The Polish shot-stopper finds himself below both Petr Cech and David Ospina in the pecking order, and if reports today are to be believed, he could leave the club in search of more playing time.

According to The Times, Roma are interested in securing his services next season. It remains unclear as to whether the Serie A side want a permanent transfer or a loan deal, but the interest is quite apparent.

It is stated that Szczesny wants to stay on at the club, but the Gunners aren’t too impressed with his showings both on and off the pitch last season. Therefore, they would not be too upset to sell if the right offer comes along.

Roma’s first-choice and second-choice goalkeepers last season, Bogdan Labont and Morgan De Sanctis, are aged 37 and 38 respectively. Therefore, it is obvious that they need some young blood in that department. Szczesny, at 25, offers the perfect option.

For all his goalkeeping qualities though, the Arsenal man was in the news for the wrong reasons last season. Some extremely poor form, along with some off-field issues which involved him snapped smoking a cigarette, caused him to relinquish his place in the first-team to Ospina.

It was expected that the Colombian would be the one to leave with Cech’s arrival from Chelsea, but those talks have died down.

Szczesny has been at Arsenal since the age of 16, working his way up from the Youth Team to the first XI. Despite dropping out in the Premier League midway through last season, he continued to be Arsene Wenger’s first-choice goalie in the FA Cup, a competition which Arsenal have won for two years in succession now. Szczesny kept a clean sheet as his side beat Aston Villa 4-0 in the final.
