Arsenal transfer deal collapsed for just €2m, player was ready with suitcases to travel

Share

Arsene Wenger openly claimed in the media that Arsenal won’t be selling young striker Joel Campbell in the summer. That should have ended all speculations. For those Arsenal fans, who kept on reminding us this that since a manager of the club has said it, rest of the media stories are all fabricated, we have a name for you: Jose Mourinho.

The Chelsea manager claimed way back in the last week of July that the Blues had ended all the businesses and yet they signed Loic Remy on the penultimate day of the transfer window. That shows, you can hardly take manager’s words as gospels from Bible.

Portuguese media were confident that Arsenal could be looking to do a business for young Campbell. There were even reports from Record that Wenger would allow the striker to leave the club to join Benfica, should the Frenchman sign a top striker like Cavani.

Well, Arsenal indeed signed a striker yesterday as they sealed a late deal for Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck. However, there wasn’t any movement away from the club.

Today O Jogo are claiming that Benfica had tried to sign Campbell yesterday but couldn’t match Arsenal’s valuation.

The Eagles had offered €10m for the Costa Rican striker, but Arsenal refused to sell him below €12m. Basically, they just missed out on the deal for a paltry fee of €2m.

The report claim that Campbell was ready to leave. He has had his suitcase ready as was expecting that the deal would go through. Now, as it stands Campbell will have to fight for his places at the Emirates this season.

  1. He’s with La Sele in Washington DC being watched very closely in an International against Nicaragua. If Wenger hasn’t played him by January he will be off and having supported Arsenal for over 40 years so will I. The lad has World class qualities, far more than some of our players, buy has been badly managed by Wenger, Good luck to Joel in the match

    • Colin, i agree with you. With Welbeck up front, we expect that Wenger play with Alexis, Walcott and Welbeck up front. Ozil will finally play at number 10. Really hope that Joe has his opportunity because he tottaly deserve it and he is one of our best players. I would like to see Walcott, Alexis and Campbell up front, but we all know Wenger prefer some players. It´s shocking at the moment play Sanogo or Cazorla ahead of Joe. Good luck Joe. All the best, Colin.

  2. Compared to Sanogo, Campbell is not supposed to be ‘fighting’ for a place in the Arsenal first team! Wenger should wake up from his fantasy dream and stop over-rating Sanogo. With Welbeck, Campbell should be a great back-up striker with Ozil, Wallcot, Arteta/Flamini doing the support work from the wings and centrally. If Arsene Wenger faces up to the reality of the inferior standing of Sanogo, we can still say we have a string squad waiting to be further strengthened in the winter transfer window. Pray Wenger stops all his dangerous gambles!

  3. Honestly Wenger knows it very well he may not put to proper use that young man’s services, he would have left him to go. Compbell is a very talented young boy who only need enough playing time to up his abilities.

He may waste him the way Podolosik has been wasted. That young man needs a team that will constantly play him. He has the potential to become one of the world’s greatest.

I wish him all the best.

  4. Joel Campbell was seen with a suit case on his way to Washington DC for a friendly match between his country and Nicaragua, Not to Benfica as claimed!
