Arsenal star explains two key reasons behind Gunners’ slump, Wenger unhappy

Alexis Sanchez

Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez has admitted that the Gunners’ recent struggles are down to a lack of winning mentality and the hunger for silverware.

The north London club have lost last three matches, which includes a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League knockout stage. Arsenal need an outstanding performance in the return leg at Camp Nou in order to make it to the quarter final of the Europe’s elite club competition.

Sanchez was a part of Barcelona squad, who were hungry for success and won silverware. The Chilean international believes his current employers can go on to win the Premier League title this term, only if they showcase the desire and hunger to win England’s top flight club competition.

“If we go out on to the pitch with hunger to become champions, to win the Premier League or the Champions League we can achieve it,” Sanchez told DirecTV, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“There are great players here, I train with them daily and they have got the mentality and the desire to win.”

“But sometimes we lack the hunger, the mentality that we are winning 1-0 when we go out on to the pitch. Sometimes we lack this hunger to believe that we can be champions. To go out on to the pitch feeling that we are already winning 1-0.”

Arsenal’s latest defeat came at the hands of Swansea City during the midweek league tie at the Emirates. The Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has also echoed the comments made by Sanchez.

The Frenchman admitted that his current crop of players at the club are lacking confidence, which is why they have seen suffer two consecutive league defeats at the hands of Manchester United and Swansea.

“It looks a little bit like that [we are lacking confidence], yes,” Wenger explained.

“We have to focus on our job and come back reminding ourselves that we have some quality as well. We’ve got to analyse this result and bounce back. We have a big game this weekend.”
