Arsenal to rekindle interest in Ashley Williams
Swansea skipper Ashley Williams has been a stalwart at the back for the Welsh side ever since they earned promotion to the Premier League in 2011, and now according to the Metro, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has rekindled his interest in bringing him to North London.
The report claims that the 29-year-old is eager for a new challenge, with the Gunners keen on the move. With just over a year remaining on his current deal, Williams’ bargaining position is strong, and could choose Arsenal after missing out on a switch last summer.
The Gunners chief came close to signing the Wales international last August, but will make a second approach at the end of season if Thomas Vermaelen asks to leave.
Vermaelen is understood to be considering his options having fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium, with Manchester United known to be keen on the 29-year-old.
Williams has made more than 250 appearances for Swansea but is unlikely to sign a new contract at the Liberty Stadium, and has less than 18 months left to run on his current deal.
The defender has hinted he would be interested in a move to a bigger club and wants to experience Champions League football before he retires.
This is what Ashley Williams said back in August 2013 about the potential move to Arsenal: “It’s all very flattering, but you take it with a pinch of salt because you see a lot written and you never know what to make of it.
“I just take it as a compliment. You must be doing something right, whether it’s true or not. I try to leave it there.”
What do you think? Would Williams be a good signing for Arsenal?
