Everton’s 2014-15 season is going from bad to worse. The Toffees finished fifth last season, just a shade away from fourth placed Arsenal but this term has been nothing short of disastrous. Manager Roberto Martinez needs to turn things around quickly else face the wrath of fans. According to reports from the Irish Independent, Arsenal are plotting a £25m move for midfielder James McCarthy who is incidentally also a Manchester United target.

The report claims that the Gunners have scouted McCarthy for three months now and are planning a January raid for the 24 year old. The main motive for the London side’s interest is that McCarthy is an immense versatile player and is also on low wages. Moreover, Everton are also a selling club which means they could part with the player if they receive a substantial offer.

McCarthy joined Everton from Wigan Athletic in a £13m move last season but the report claims that his market value now stands at £25m. High wages will also play a transfer if McCarthy does move in January as the report claims that top players earn £70,000-a-week at Everton, which is quite a higher figure than what McCarthy currently earns.

Martinez though buried the rumours saying that McCarthy is for the long term, “James already has a very long-term contract. So I don’t know where the talk is coming from.He arrived at the club 13 months ago, his contract is long-term and the ambition of everyone is to see him at Everton for many, many years.”

However only time shall tell if the Blues really resist a huge bid from the top clubs in England.
