Arsenal loom in the race for the title
Christmas is my favourite time of the year and I hope everyone had a good one. Personally, all I asked was for a seemingly impossible win against Aston Villa. The West Midland giants have smashed Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool and are threatening to break into the top four.
The Arsenal apparently, the poorest out of these teams were expected to roll over and let the speed-demons take over at The Emirates. The immensely talented Aston Villa team looked well organised but in all fairness even before Fabregas came on, Arsenal looked better. I have always wondered if players really, truly understood what a must win game means to fans and to the football club.
Like the Liverpool game, with Chelsea looking shambolic, even with all their stars not missing for the ACN’s, Arsenal had to capitalise. They did and should they win their game in hand, they shoot into second, above Manchester United and a mere one point behind the West London club.
I cannot stress enough that after Chelsea hammed Arsenal, I didn’t come across one person that thought Arsenal would win the title. And yet, less than a month later, they look to punish Chelsea in the best possible way, by keeping close and in the running via winning as many games as possible.
For the first time in about six years, Arsenal looked determined. They made Villa’s talent look average and kept going after many missed chances. I have always been a massive fan of Vassiriki Diaby, probably because of the impact he had when he first came to the club only for a classless “footballer” make a tackle to rule him out for eighteen months. Yesterday, Diaby lit up the Emirates, whilst Dan Smith, then of Sunderland was probably watching it on the telly, who is currently without a club.
Patrick Veira has been eulogised into being the ultimate Captain Fantastic and Cesc Fabregas did his best to write his own legend. Instead of words, he used his feet and breathtaking skills to earn a win. A brief cameo that lasted a mere twenty-eight minutes reminded me of a celebrity gracing an opening of a club or bar to rear more custom. Every time he plays like that, I get a bit more addicted. I buy more merchandise and the love strengthens!
It was clear that Arsene Wenger had his tactics right, probably learning from the other big four’s mistakes. It is also clear that Thomas Vermealen has made most fans forget about Kolo Toure and adore the centre-back partnership with Gallas.
However, the most crystallised development this season is the fact that the best player in the world plays for Arsenal Football Club. His heroic’s against Tottenham and Villa has made him the most in-form player in the world right now. I hope he keeps it up. We’ve got Cesc Fabregas.

Ah Gurjeevan returns….riding the wave of the PL and all its emotions weekly!
I agree about Cesc,…truly outstanding!
I also agree that Arsenal have a real chance this season….what with Utd and Chelsea looking vunerable.
But the question remains whether Arsenal can cope in from March to May where they’ve faultered in the last 2 seasons and whether they can cope with defensive injuries when they come?
Questions that won’t be answered for a few months yet……but in the meantime I’ll enjoy your articles on the subject, as the story unfolds!
December 29th, 2009 @ 13:59this is the best write up i have read of arsenal in recent time and believe it, we’ve got the best player in the world right now .
December 29th, 2009 @ 14:13Arsenal’s chances of winning something big this year depend on a few factors far beyond their immediate control:
* Staying away from more key injuries,(unlikely)
* Injured stars returning faster than anticipated,(?)
* Chelski,Manure and Villa, the spuds and Citeh dropping more points (quite likely),
* Getting formidable games from ALL their players at the same time, unlike the Villa game where Eduardo, Arshavin and Denilson were uninspired,(possible)
* Consistently fair and quality refereeing,(unlikely)
* During the transfer window, bringing in a world class striker and defensive midfielder and maybe another keeper,(????),
* Wenger’s genius continuing to work miracles.(Very likely)
Every morning I wake up from a dream where a fully fit Arsenal squad win the Champion’s League, beating Real in the semi-finals 6-0 aggregate and hammering Barcelona in the Final 4-0 (Cesc scoring the last 2 goals and giving LaPorta the finger while doing it) and then winning the double again, over the spuds 5-0 away and beating Chelsea 3-0 at Samford Bridge to win the League!!! This would be Nirvana…..
December 29th, 2009 @ 15:44Before the Villa game, I thought we had no chance against their very good and talented side, but arsenal almost outplayed them. Arsenal created a lot of chances and restricted Villa to minimal chances. Downing, Young, Agbonlahor, and Milner were kept quiet. I was more than happy when we won the game. After that game, I have slight optimism that we can win the league. but still I’m not sure that the team has what it takes to win the league. Personally, I like Diaby too. I feel he is a talented player (little bit slow though). He has played brilliantly in the last couple of games. It’s amazing that how the hope that disappeared by a comprehensive Chelsea defeat at Emirates sprung back to life within a month.. but honestly, that defeat still hurts…
December 29th, 2009 @ 20:31Great article Gurjeevan,
December 30th, 2009 @ 06:01Totally agree with him about Diaby, he was the man on the park way back to the Carling cup final against Chelsea, he showed real class then but had to go off injured because Terry stuck his head in the way of his right foot – Terry should have been booked for that!
and we ended up losing the game, our young lads completely dominated the game till that moment, I feel his time has now come again.
arsenal are going to win the title no dout they will pass man u fogget about chelsea and liverpool there is no way liverpool can come ether 1 2 3 or 4.
