Arsenal vs Liverpool – An early decider?
This weekend, two Champions League contenders will clash. With the 4th spot seemingly up for grabs, both Liverpool and Arsenal are coveting the prized position. Now, many will scoff at the notion that Saturday’s fixture holds significance. This is understandable, as the season’s curtains have only just been raised. Nevertheless, a win for either team may prove to be a crucial stepping-stone and could fill their respective fans with optimism.
Both teams will be eyeing an important victory. Defeating one’s Champions League rival early doors should provide a benchmark. However, Liverpool and Arsenal will also be looking to settle personal matters.
Over the past two seasons, Anfield accommodated a wounded giant. Despised owners and lacklustre management had Liverpool at sixes and sevens. Worryingly, these factors contributed to the Reds’ languish in the Premier League standings. Therefore, unsurprisingly, the red carpet was readily rolled out for King Kenny’s return.
The legendary figure has instilled a positive atmosphere around Merseyside. Performances, results and the vocals of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ have all improved. Backed by John W. Henry’s supportive ownership, Kenny Dalglish is ready to match the American’s ambition for the club. Does this summer’s spending spree have Liverpool well equipped to end their Champions League hiatus? A win over Arsenal could certainly signify so.
Currently, Arsenal are in the doldrums. A goalless draw on opening day and an unconvincing 1-0 victory over Udinese has drawn many critics. At present, life as an Arsenal fan doesn’t seem to have a bright side.
The Gunners faithful have witnessed the departure of the talismanic Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri appears to be following suit. Consequently, Arsenal fans are pleading with their manager to reinvest in the squad. However, Wenger has, so far, taken a conservative approach to the transfer market. As a result, the supporters are becoming restless. The “In Wenger We Trust” banners have been blown away in a gust of disappointment. Many believe that the club is too weak to challenge for Champions League qualification, let alone major honours.
An encouraging win over Liverpool would be a real blessing for Arsene Wenger. It should silence his doubters and, more importantly, offer reassurance to the Arsenal fans. The times might be inappropriate for a celebratory ‘Wenger Shuffle’, but the Frenchman would certainly be relieved. Fundamentally, a place among Europe’s elite would still be strongly on the agenda.
All in all, let’s hope for an exciting game.
