Arsenal in pole position to sign Wigan star

Arsenal are ready to take pole position to sign Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy according to latest reports.

The versatile midfield man has been one of Wigan’s best players this season, starting every game and attracting the interest of Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton.

However, Arsenal are thought to be in the best position to make an initial £8 million bid for McCarthy who would fit in nicely alongside the gifted youngsters committed to Arsenal’s future.

Arsenal are also in the best position to offer McCarthy the best personal terms as they have a stronger financial model and infrastructure than either of the Merseyside clubs.

This would mean the Gunners don’t have to break their wage structure which would risk alienating a number of key players at the club.

Arsenal will have to act quickly as soon as they put an initial offer in because if Liverpool and Everton are given the chance to respond, the price could soon rise above the £8 million mark as a bidding war follows.

If that happens then Arsene Wenger has proved himself reluctant in the past to pay over the odds for a player, regardless of quality or who is also trying to sign that player.

McCarthy has made just under 100 appearances since he joined Wigan in 2009 and he has also secured nine international caps for the Republic of Ireland.

He has been described as one of the most underrated midfielders in the Premier League this season as his strength means he can play a defensive role and his pace and control allows him to be effective in a creative attacking role.

The arrival of McCarthy and a deal which keeps Theo Walcott at the Emirates would go a long way to pacifying the fans who have criticised Arsene Wenger for allowing the best players to leave and the best talent to slip under the radar.

  1. No one cares for McCarthy or wants him. This is a terrible transfer. We only want a young player with the potential to turn into a superstar – McCarthy is not that person. Zaha or Shaw maybe but not McCarthy.

We need a world class defensive midfielder first and foremost to protect that sorry excuse of a defence. M’Vila or Wanyama are the preferences. After that we need an attacker like Villa who can play centre or left and then we need a left back to cover Gibbs as Santos shouldn’t be allowed with 400 metres of a football.

    • Wanyama is not ‘world class’. At this time M’Vila has a ‘world class’ reputation as petulant young man with a troublesome temperment.

    • A terrible transfer? So buying a proven premiership performer over a championship rookie, who may or may not prove to be a decent player in a couple of years, is what everyone wants?. Exactly how many times have you watched Zaha and McCarthy play before you came to this conclusion?

  2. I want 2 be happy a Arsenal fan. Pls let Mr Wenger, help us 2 be hapi. Pls mr Wenger buy players.

  3. We wont youth talents… We already have lot of.. we need experience one… Who can make goal from long distance… Super kicker… Potential free kick finisher…

  4. That McCathy kid is wonderful. He will bring a lot of energy and
fighting spirit we have lacked since the loss of Parlour. Did you see the weakness against Southampton? That would’nt been there if we had McCathy in that team. He would have rallied and gave a WAR CRY that would jolted the team. We lack leaders too. Arteta is too polite to be the leader. Ball players are good but there is nothing like a fighter who goes toe to toe with his worst enemy.
About time we had an IRISHMAN in the team.

    • I’m a gooner and welsh but I agree with what you say about fight. We need it, someone with the heart to die for the cause.

  5. Wenger shld start buying world class players.he will see good results&stop wasting time by calling names of 100 players yet u hav not even commit like chelsea, what are u waiting for….!

  6. James McCarthy would be a great buy. He is young with a never give up attitude, something Arsenal needs. Agree with Goonerbeall that he would bring something to the team that we haven’t had since Parlour.
Would also like to see a reliable defender come in, and I pray that the rumours of Arsenal going in for Fellaini are true.

  7. I think Wenger is panicking. Let him bring in just 2 quality players and fans will just give back the confidence they had years ago. For now is a WAIT AND SEE
