Arsenal have luck on their side
Arsenal came from behind to beat Wigan with two late goals to move into 4th place and go only 1 point behind Liverpool but controversy rages over the 1st goal which looked offside.
The game started slowly and it took until 9 minutes had gone before the first serious chance came, Henry’s free kick was easily gathered by Chris Kirkland and then just over half a second later he held a Tomas Rosicky effort from distance.
However Wigan showed that they shouldn’t be underestimated as Danny Landzatt had his long ranged effort saved by Jens Lehmann but Arsenal were soon on top as Rosicky shot wide before Henry missed a great chance when he fired over after Walcott had put in a good cross.
There was a scare in the Wigan defence when Emmerson Boyce miskicked a Rosicky shot but luckily it worked in their favour as it meant the ball eluded Henry and the goal. However the Arsenal fans thought it couldn’t be long now till their team had scored as Henry had seen his free kick caught by Kirkland just before this.
However it was Wigan who took the lead on 35 minutes when Danny Landzatt fired home after Arsenal seemed to clear their lines. Danny Landzatt picked up the ball 25 yards out and fired into the top of the net leaving the goalie with no chance and Wigan could have doubled their lead but Aghahowa drilled the ball over the bar.
Wigan had a fantastic chance to go 2-0 up before half time when Emile Heskey was played through and the fingertips of Lehmann helped push the ball onto the post and it was then held by Lehmann and then about a minute later Henry headed wide from a Gael Clichy cross.
Emile Heskey had another chance just after half time to double Wigan’s advantage but after been played in he blazed over the bar and this made Arsene Wenger bring on Emmanuel Adebayor for Johan Djourou.
Arsenal had a penalty appeal turned down on 56 minutes when Gael Clichy was nudged by Ryan Taylor from behind and replays proved inconclusive but it did look like an accident however Wigan were still on the backfoot as first Baptista fired wide and then Walcott over.
Wigan were always looking a threat on the counter attack and Josip Skoko nearly copied Landzatt but his shot went just over before Rosicky fired wide and Wenger threw on Flamini and Aliadiere for Cesc Fabregas and Justin Hoyte and the Arsenal fans thought they’d equalized on 71 minutes but Adebayor’s effort was correctly ruled out for offside.
Paul Jewell was fuming on 78 minutes when Heskey looked to have been bought down by Mathieu Flamini replays showed there was contact but was it enough for a penalty? Paul Jewell thought so and to add insult to injury Arsenal scored just 3 minutes later when Adebayor played it to Flamini out wide and he crossed it in and by accident Fitz Hall stuck it in his own net. However Flamini was offside when Adebayor passed to him and further controversy followed when Henry mocked Chris Kirkland the Wigan goalie after the goal.
Henry shot wide as Arsenal looked for a winner and it did come when Adebayor played it to Baptista and he fired it along the 6 yard box and Tomas Rosicky headed it home for his 1st ever goal for Arsenal the delight in the Emirates was clear for all to see and despite Wigan throwing on Kevin Kilbane and Antonio Valencia, Arsenal had got the 3 points.

There was as much contact on Clichy as there was on Heskey, so they were either both penalties or both not penalties.
I therefore fail to see why Jewell is getting upset about that.
Yes, Henry dived, not nice, and I don’t make any excuses for that, but lickily nothing came of it, unlike some other dives we have seen recently.
As far as the off-side went, yes the Flamster was marginally off, but then Ade was onside for the goal that wasn’t given, so I don’t think anyone should get too upset about that either.
As far as Henry’s incident with kirkland was concerned, I have no sympathy for kirkland. That is the first time I’ve seen time-wasting already starting in the first half of the game, it was p!ss-poor and deserved everything Henry felt like doing and more.
Jens got a yellow for pulling the p!ss and imitating once what kirkland had been doing all game. Jens got a yellow, where was kirklands?
All in all, Wigan were a tough side and played with a lot of heart, but Arsenal, although playing badly, were very likely going to be too strong for them, although one has to admit, they could have been the first to profit with 3 points at The Grove.
As a matter of interest, when Wenger has a tirade like Jewell had at the end of the match, the media have a full go at him for being a “bad loser”, “out of line” etc., etc.
Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander chaps, why the silence from the media?
Jewell was being a cry-baby, no doubt. The 50m jibe was cheap, but having said that if Jewell’s right about Dowd (which I doubt), then he should complain to the FA directly.
All things said and done, perhaps Jewell is over-reacting because they were ahead against Arsenal and were minutes away from a win.
Still, childish and uncalled for.
is it just me or is henry getting more arrogant with age? =P
