I have a theory, and it is more than likely to be wrong, but let me put it forward anyway. To me it seems strange that Kompany would go to a club like Man City. I believe that there may be something ulterior going on within the transfer. Perhaps Man City and Arsenal have a deal going on - Wenger proposes Kompany moves to Man City for a season in a secret deal with Hughes, allowing Kompany to join Arsenal next season should he perform well enough for Man City. In exchange Arsenal line up a decent transfer and swap deal (perhaps someone like Diaby). In sum, could Kompany be an Arsenal player already, playing in the guise of Man City. I don't know, but thought it qorth some speculation. What do you think?

Tim,

Maybe you make a good point I dont know. Your inability to grasp one of the most fundamental parts of the english language i.e paragraphs make your posts unreadable.

Try again. This time pause.....and breathe......then write again.....

Tim, have you considered the fact that Wenger has helped the national team but not the three lions?

You say how it's Arsenal's responsibility to provide players for England. Really? Is it?

You see, it's easy to point fingers. The problem isn't with the English national team, nor is it with the Premiership clubs.

The FA needs to change their outlook and start by building world-class youth centers and training facilities like the ones they have in France. That will nuture national talent.

As Luke (my second name!), has said: If it's about cost, then there is no debate. However, on the academies, since when were man city a top team? They don't populate the Pl, they keep them where they are; and frankly other than Richards, I don't think that any of the other mention have star quality. What was amazing about last year was that they finished 3rd, four points behind, with the injuries to some very, very key players, full of young players, many of whom can now be considered near- veterans. I cannot predict what this year will bring, but we are not going to get any worse, I think.

Yes, it would have been good had there been en English player to proud about; though frankly I am less pride at what--playing a friendly against the Czech Republic?

During the Euros, my watch was on Cesc, who I was as proud of as I would have been for any English players-— and I'd like to ask whom among you didn't take equal pride with is achievements. Damn, he is one of us! ? What does that tell us--that I am less morally worse than anyone else for this? For better or worse, we are a cosmopolitan team; one that I think will have more Brits in the near future, but what's thoroughly unique about Arsenal is not it's global branding, which it is quite weak at (the hate-on anti-Adebayor crowd might resent this, but I bought an his shirt, along with a Cesc one-- Theo's was not available-- here in Toronto for my daughters) but it's at-home cosmopolitanism. Yes, for the players that we have bought, but also for the players that Arsenal have developed from all over the world, but look around the stadium, at the old Highbury and at the Emirates, and see what kind of people we pull in. I'm not expecting people to have divided loyalties, and expect people to root for the English boys when they take the field against whomever; and I also expect people to take pleasure from those kids who end up playing for England from the Gunners, but it is also not so simple anymore, no more than it is for the expectation of what managers to do for their country of work, rather than their country of origin.

LUKE i agree with some of your points you made but surely arsenal not playing any english players the past few seasons has cost england (and arsenal) dear. arsenal has young english talent but they will sadly never see an arsenal shirt. as i mentioned before wenger will sell them off as he has done for many years. look at arsenals midfield crisis right now. i bet many arsenal fans wish they had kept bentley. even when he was sold to spurs via blackburn, arsenal made i think 7mn from the deal! i dont care what nationality a player is but even a manager must have some conscience and loyality. look at portsmouths harry redknapp, he cares very much about portsmouth and the england team. thats why he has balanced his team(s) with english and foreign players. you have to see the bigger picture. englands future will come from clubs like arsenal and visa-versa arsenals future will come from england players but right now arsenal have english talent which will never get a chance thanks to wengers narrow thinking of mostly playing french players. arsenal is like buying a ferrari and keeping it in the garage and never taking it out for a spin. its pointless! wenger and the board must go for arsenal to progress in the new football world. you say players should be picked only if they are good enough well then obviously the players wenger has picked the past few seasons isnt good enough. and guess what..... they are the same players this season par one or two. i hope randall and gibbs and the rest get given a real chance to perform and not just be used for the carling cup (which isnt a major money spinner like other cups) so that the french players can be rested for the champions league and premier league etc! tottenham won the carling cup with english players. man utd won the premier league and euro championship with english players and portsmouth won the fa cup with english players. and so has chelsea won nearly everything in the past with english players. even liverpool triumphed in europe recently with english players. arsenal hasnt. a balance is needed to succeed. never include shevchenko into a discussion, roman-a bought him coz he was his favourite player. if i owned a club and had that amount of money id buy essien for 40, 50 or 60mn coz hes my favourite player. torres @ 24mn was a steal! and drogba is (or was) the best striker in the world. unbelievable strength and pace, similar to henry who was also awesome at arsenal. i wont be commenting further as i will be away. its been a good discussion i think theres nothing i can add that i havent said already. i wish all teams a safe and injury free season. hoping to see some young english talents flower and it would be even better to see them in an arsenal shirt.... we can dream i guess.

Walcott yet isnt good enough (albeit I don't think Eboue is or ever will be) but that will come. I think if the players are good enough then their nationality goes out of the window. Sure its nice to have young English prospects on the horizon, but as long as Arsenal win then I'm happy. Furthemore, you mention the money spent on strikers since Wayne Rooney's arrival in Manchester in 2004. Well I'm sure its a lot less than rivals Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool and equally on a par with regards to English nationality. Since 2004 Reyes, Van Persie, Walcott, Adebayor, Eduardo, Baptista (loan) as well as Bendtner and Vela have come in up front. I think thats around a total of £35M, less than 2 Wayne Rooneys, not to mention the £6M regained on Reyes and £16 for Henry. You look to the other top 4 and you have Torres and Drogba both costing £24M, Shevchenko costing £30M etc. So to see Arsenal finish 4 points behind, with minimum outlay and a team bursting with youth albeit largely foreign is an accomplishment in itself. You also have to look at the bigger picture - we have several young quality English players coming through - Jack Wilshere had a impressive pre season, Mark Randall made numerous appearances in the FA and Carling Cup last season, as well as Kieron Gibbs amongst others.

SYDLEY u are right wenger doesnt have a duty towards the england squad but arsenal DOES! what you said proves it yet again. the day the england squad was announced tottenhams website ran a story about 4 of its players being in the squad. spurs took great pride in that. even chelseas website ran a story on j. cole. man utd covered the game too in depth. arsenal fans deserve that pride too.

LUKE you still dont get it do you? silvestre cost 750k and kompany cost man city 6mn (im going on figures quoted in the media in both cases). surely like the topic suggests its arsenal who should be buying kompany and man city buying the likes of silvestre. have you seen kompany play? the man is awesome, hes a beast. and how can u say arsenal have no resbonsibilty to provide for england????? man utd chelsea and even portsmouth players 'fight' to get into the squad! thats what football is all about!!! so what your saying is arsenal could play in the french league as it doesnt matter??? as for arsenals strikers you add up the cost of henry, bendtner, walcott, van persie, pires, eduardo, wiltord, bergkamp, kanu, aliadiere, reyes, abeyie etc etc (since 2004 when rooney joined man utd from everton for 20mn) and then add the cost of losing titles such as the fa cup, premier league and champions league. the champions league alone was worth 82mn to man utd this year! and if you add marketing etc on top of that the numbers are crazy. albiet van persie and walcott play in the midfield/wings depending on team performance etc but they are mainly strikers. you also mention crouch, heskey and defoe. i personally dont rate any of them highly. my point is young english players should be given a chance, like matt derbyshire etc. and a club like arsenal should have english players. i quote 'we still have a damn good shot at winnning the league this year' if you really believe that arsenal can play as good as or better than they did last season then i hope u are right. personally i dont see it happening. its been a long time since arsenal won anything. even if arsenal had a 100mn to spend wenger would still fill up the squad with french players (or french speaking players). all im saying here is that arsenal needs more english players who can thrive at the club and possibly the national team. believe it or not but arsenal is actually an english club! i still cant get over the fact that you said arsenal has no responsibilty to the england squad. omg, talk about having no hope. its wenger who is sticking up 2 fingers to english players and sadly loyal arsenal fans will accept another empty season. to me thats nonsensical. remember tukey in the euros? you could buy the whole team for 10 pounds and still have change. but they believed in themselves and were proud to wear ther national shirt. to them it was a matter of honour. england players care more about their gucci shirt than they do of their england shirt. only way to bring back some pride is to play more english players in all teams to have them compete for a place. arsenals contribution? walcott on a bench. ridiculous!
