Pedro Rodriquez recently signed a contract extension at Barcelona that will keep him at the club till 2019. The present contract includes a €150m buy-out clause, but that has hardly stopped major European clubs trying their luck in signing him.

To be honest, these release clause hardly mean anything. Pedro’s previous contract was set to expire in 2016. Barcelona didn’t want to lose Pedro at a knockdown price, especially when the club is under a transfer ban till January 2016. The new contract merely allows Barca to get a substantial fee for Pedro, if he leaves the club any time soon.

Pedro

The 27-year-old is dyed in the wool Barcelona, having progressed through the junior ranks at the club. He has already won six league titles and three Champions League with Barca. He has lived his dream. At the same time he understands that he is not getting regular game time like before, as it is getting increasing difficult for him to break the trident of Suarez-Messi-Neymar upfront and make a room for himself.

Put it simply, Pedro could be tempted to move away from the Catalan club. And Barcelona could be willing to sell, provided they get a sizeable transfer fee for the Spanish striker.

Catalan newspaper Sport (far from being trustworthy as their recent coverages suggest so) claims that Premier League clubs, Arsenal and Liverpool, are showing a strong interest in the player, and both the clubs have made official contacts with the player’s representative.

The clubs have shown willingness to negotiate a possible transfer for Pedro. The player in turn would be interested in moving to the Premier League as well. Sport mentions Pedro is more intrigued with Liverpool’s offer.

Liverpool are looking at replacements for Raheem Sterling, who is attracting strong interest from Manchester City. In case, he leaves the club in the summer, Liverpool could make a move for the Barcelona forward.
