Arsenal 1-2 Manchester United: Five talking points

Manchester United starting XI

Wayne RooneyManchester United sealed a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday. The victory saw the Red Devils move fourth in the table.

Soccerlens brings you five things we learnt from the 20-times English champions’ clash against the North London club.

1. United win first match away from Old Trafford

The victory against Arsenal saw Louis van Gaal register his first away win as United manager. So far this season, the Dutchman has suffered defeats and settled for a draw when his side have played away from Old Trafford this season. The victory should give United the much needed confidence for their upcoming fixtures.

2. Paddy McNair is United’s lucky charm

The 19-year-old has started in four league matches for United and the Old Trafford club have won all four matches when the Northern Irishman started for the Red Devils (He came as a substitute against Manchester City).

3. Robin van Persie is struggling

The former Arsenal skipper was replaced in the second half as youngster James Wilson came on for Van Persie. The Dutch international has been struggling this season and his place in United’s starting lineup could be in danger when Radamel Falcao returns to full fitness.

4. Van Gaal’s gamble of back three paid off

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager changed the formation and went back to three-man defence. He failed to win in his opening three league matches against Swansea City, Sunderland and Burnley.

However, the Dutch manager managed to seal a win with his preferred formation. It should be seen if Van Gaal would switch to back three of will he change United’s formation for the upcoming matches.

5. Olivier Giroud is the first choice striker

The French international made his first appearance after scoring twice for Arsenal against Everton earlier in August. The striker returned from injury and had an impact after scoring a brilliant goal in the stoppage time.

In Giroud absence, Arsene Wenger deployed Danny Welbeck as the first choice striker. However, the England international could be forced to play on the wide position with Giroud returning to full fitness.
