Aren’t you happy you didn’t sign David Villa?

There are several clubs who were left on the altar, so to speak, with respect to a few big signings this summer.

Liverpool lost out on Barry, Real Madrid lost out on Ronaldo, Chelsea and United may still lose out on Robinho and Berbatov, Tottenham reportedly lost out on Villa (although to be fair they weren’t front-runners in any case) as did Barcelona (who couldn’t offload Eto’o) and Madrid (who wasted too much time on Ronaldo).

People seem to be pointing to Liverpool’s signing of Fernando Torres as proof that buying young, quality talent at the right time can help your team make the step up from wannabes to challengers. If that’s the case, why did Liverpool slip from 3rd to 4th from 06/07 to 07/08? Is it that Torres coming in masked Liverpool’s problems in other areas?

It’s easy to say that signing Huntelaar or Berbatov or Villa or Robinho will give your team that ‘edge’ that they seem to be missing, and sometimes it’s true - Berbatov played a key role in Tottenham finishing 5th in the 06/07 season. But it’s not always the answer, and sometimes building a team that can learn to play together over several years (as Arsenal and United have done, and as Ramos is doing at Tottenham) is often better.

Tottenham’s problems are often over-stated - a midfield enforcer coupled with some magic water that made them fight on the pitch all season with the same tenacity that they show Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United would be enough to propel them closer to their ambitions, and in that respect one hopes that Ramos has it in him to get more out of his charges than Rafa is getting out of Liverpool (who seem to suffer from a lack of motivation, or just a lack of discipline).

Bottom line - don’t kill yourself if Berbatov or Robinho or Villa or Milito doesn’t sign today - because chances are your team can reach its goals without them.

  1. United will sign Berbatov.

    Villa would grace any team.

    I thank you.

  2. 01/09/2008 Cheshire Spur!

Yes let’s hope we can off laod that brusque and brazen bulgarian, for 25 mil,yes please..

  3. United can have Berba. He is sh*t…if he is not ‘happy’.

We still need two strikers, if Bent gets injured we are royally screwed. Garcia and Milito would be my choice, two players for the price of Arshavin and they are similiar players to Keane and Berbatov.

Fingers and toes are crossed we get at least one person in today/tonight even if it is a interim solution.

  4. Berbatov is very likely to be a United player by the end of the day, although I couldn’ care less where he goes, as long as he never wears a Tottenham shirt again. He has burned all bridges at Spurs and will never, IMO, be welcome at WHL again

    BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!!!

Spurs are going to follow up the signing of Corluka, with this hatrick of players. Milito,Velosa and Arshavin, yes you heard me right not Garcia,Heskey or Owen but Arshavin he is in London having a medical as we speak. The funds will come from selling Berbatov to Man utd for 26.8m (campbell will not be part of the deal)

Move over chelski city is going to
    become top banana!!!

  8. Berba is past his best. He’s worth no more than £18m, ever!

I really don’t understand why is Berbatov so highly regarded ? He is a good player but nothing special. I think too many big name players in the EPL are way overrated.

  10. I really do hope that Berbatov gets payback for his treachery. If Berbatov had given SPURS 100% during the transfer window and while deals were being done. Then I would have appreciated his efforts. All this shit that his head was not right is a load of B—-cks.He is supposed to be pro; footballer for gods sake but no he is a pansy and a traitor of the worst kind and I hope he gets the worse stick
a player could possibly get when we play Man;u home and away.As for the SCUM tapping up ferguson I hope it all comes back and hits him like a ton of S–T he deserves whatever he gets and I hate him with a vengeance. There is no honour in Man;u as there is at SPURS and I hope they end up in the bottom three of the premieship that would really answer my prayers.COYS////////////////////////////////

i never heard anyone complainin when berbatov left from the bundesliga to tottenham!why is he gettin so much stick now?wat bout when silvestre joined arsenal?not a sound from fans.but when berba joins man utd all this stick! its a fact when a gud player joins a good team he always get stick from worried fans who feel threatened by his performances in the player’s new team(if he does well that is)take rooney 4 example! all of u are threatened by united’s top squad!
