Antonio Valencia vs Luis Nani

Share

A lot can be said of Antonio Valencia, humble, shy, hard-working but one word will always spring to mind when you mention his name – Consistent.

When Cristiano Ronaldo fulfilled his dream to sign for Real Madrid, I, like many United fans, started worrying about the new season and how was Sir Alex going to replace him. A lot of names were mentioned from Franck Ribery to Ashley Young, many of them way overpriced which resulted because of the 80 million pounds fee for Cristiano Ronaldo and the 60+ fee Real Madrid paid for Kaka. While I’m sure many of us wanted the big name signing of Ribery, there was someone out there that was constantly rumored to Manchester United – Antonio Valencia.

When he did eventually sign for United for a fee around 18 million pounds it did raise a few heads, eyebrows, knees and toes, and when he failed to make a more than impressive start in his first few outings, many of us started doubting the lad. I’ll be honest when he did sign I did fear for the worst.

I did not watch a lot of Wigan the previous few seasons and when I did it was when United were playing Wigan. However though I put on my best poker face and went to tell all my friends and family he was going to be brilliant, while I felt in my mind that in a few months time I could be slated for all of this.

However though I shouldn’t have feared. Real Madrid also wanted to sign him, and Real Madrid don’t sign any old mugs, they sign great players and turn most of them into mugs! Also seeing as he is a United player he chose Manchester United over Real Madrid, being that he’s from South America you would think he’d be more suited to Spain and would also want to prove something to Villarreal who let him go.

However he signed for us which meant he was committed to playing for United and didn’t see United as a doorstep to a big Spanish club.

How he has proved me so wrong in a year! He’s no Ronaldo, sure, but he got seven goals which is a decent tally for a winger, however his main assets is his crossing without a shadow of a doubt. It brought back the years of ‘Golden Balls’ Becks who ever since he left we never really had an out-and-out great crosser of the ball.

When the ball goes to Antonio you know what he’s going to do, shimmy to the outside of his defender and provide a great ball, simple but highly effective. Also very difficult to stop given his natural pace, and since he has a very low profile managers never make sure he gets extra attention.

Also Antonio is a team player, and the Manchester United vs Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge where he did a number on Ashley Cole for the majority of the game proved that. If you get the chance to watch that game again listen to how many times Ashley Cole’s name is mentioned, it’s not a lot.

Last season was a good season for Antonio and Nani, often got me thinking who’s the better player?

When Nani clicks into gear he is a force to be reckoned with, but the keyword to highlight there is ‘when‘, because when the ball arrives to Nani’s feet you don’t know whether he’s going to do what he did at Arsenal and rip three or four defenders to shreds before scoring a great goal, or check inside and sky a shot miles over the bar. While he has improved on that last season he still is very unpredictable.

Nani has endured a tough career at Manchester United so far. He has often been cached into the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo, and until his Portuguese compatriot left for Madrid have we seen what seems to be the real Nani, a huge talent that once he smooths out his rough edges is sure to be a powerhouse name in world football.

With great skills, quick feet and a shot that would rival any one on the planet when he strikes it correctly the lad had a lot going for him. While Ronaldo seemed to enjoy the celebrity life and all the publicity he got and the way he reveled in being the most hated player in England after 2006 World Cup, Nani seems a more level headed guy, with Sir Alex describing him as shy.

You never hear about Nani getting into trouble outside football unlike a certain Brazilian. Nani has showed us without doubt he isn’t a wannabe Ronaldo he is his own person and a very good footballer, who can provide the goods on the big occasions.

However for me the winner is Antonio Valencia, if anyone watched the first leg of the last 16 game of the Champions League game where Manchester United took on AC Milan, you would have seen for the first 60 minutes Nani make waste after wasted cross on one of his worse days, enter Valencia just back from injury and a rest from the team and within a few minutes he provides an excellent ball to the head of Wayne Rooney and United are 2-1 up and go on to win 3-2.

That game showed me if given the option to pick Nani or Valencia, I would pick Valencia. For me Antonio is a player who will week in, week out get a seven or eight out of ten, Nani however is a player could be a five or six out of ten one week to a nine or ten the next. However since Manchester United have both we can enjoy the best of both wings.

We’ll all be expecting more from Nani next season, while for Valencia more of the same please!

What do you think? Who would you have in your team Nani or Valencia? Maybe these will help you decide:

  1. Valencia every time. After watching the match against Airtricity League XI last night, that’s still the case! Nani continues to be wasteful and greedy where Valencia is the complete opposite. His crosses get to a United player 9/10 and he rarely takes on goal himself. When he does, he has a more than fair chance of scoring (which he did). Nani is a cut inside and shoot merchant. I also lost count of the number of times he needlessly gave the ball away by dallying on it too long rather than making the pass, either inside or down the wing.

Valencia last year made me enjoy watching United again. It was a throwback to the old days when we employed wingers to great effect. Valencia made us realise what we had been missing all those years.

  2. I love outrageous and FLAIR players, with cheeky, impudent skills, and Nani has more of these than Valencia. Nani’s goals are of all different types, and mostly very special. He has the nerve to take penalties for us, and that does take bottle, and he has never missed one yet – although I hope my pointing this out, does not bring bad omen to him LOL. Nani is the best crosser into the box we have, when Fergie plays him. It is easier to be consistent as you say Valencia is IF you get games all season. Nani got Portugal to the world cup in Ronnie’s absence, and in Ronnie’s presence getting the goals for Portugal as Ronnie was off form. Nani is invariably played out of his natural position for us, on the left instead of the right wing, so Valencia plays on the right, because unlike Nani Valencia can’t play on both wings. Am I a Nani fan, you bet I have supported the lad when most United fans were putting him down, but I saw he had terrific skills. Valencia is ok until he comes up against top class defenders, but he is seldom double or triple player marked as Nani is in games. Ask yourself why that is? However I do value Valencia’s DEFENSIVE abilities which exceed Nani’s. Nani is no tackler, whereas Valencia would make a good right full back. We have two great wingers, but Nani is the flair player. We don’t need to choose, because we can play them both. Nani proved against Bayern at OT that he can find space, often one on one in the box, and score great goals. Valencia doesn’t have this. So it is hard to judge two very different type of players!

  4. They are both fantastic assets.

Valencia’s crossing and strength in defence are his best attibrutes (although he scored with his left foot last night- what was that about?).

Nani’s flair and ability to do the jaw dropping (between the infuriating) mark him out.

You also refer to the game against Milan at the San Siro but remember that at Old Trafford Nani played a massive part in the game, setting up the second goal from the left.

I agree that at the byline I’d prefer Valencia to whip in a cross rather than Nani. However, in a one on one (as Valencia had against Blackburn) it’d have to be Nani. Fortunately United can boast both who I believe, with their different attributes, are the two most complimentary wingers of any side in Europe and are likely to get better given their ages.

  5. Nani is far too inconsistant currently to be a great player. Yes he can be great (like taking Arsenal apart in the Cup game a couple of seasons ago – single handedly) – but 1/2 the time he is incredibly wasteful and 90% of his shots are stupidly wide / high.

Valencia has his 2nd season coming up and Im hopeful the lad will make an improvement on what was already pretty good 1st season. Im hoping he can score in the double figures this season while still setting up plenty of assists

Its also worth noting Nani is coming up to his 4th season with United, and another one like the last and we need to sell him fast so we can get a more consistant and reliable replacement

  6. Valencia all the way! cosistency, every week he plays great, love that lad!

  7. about nani, yea he is inconsistent…well wht do u expect with a person who jst emerged of being under shadow of ronaldo for dat long time??he was always the second choice..well apart from this, his skills are outstanding…he is one of the players who can trick 3players at once without sweat…..yes he definatly makes mistakes when the pressure is on..last season he made more mistakes when rooney was absent because berbatov wasnt quite capable of being dependent as a goal scoorer….and other times for his quality and ability to score, all his attempts were worth it..he was unlucky..about valencia, a new comer could do dat well is quite magnificient…he certaily lack much skills but his pace is quite unbetable,.about his crosses,as far as i remember many of the goals dat roo scored was magnificiently passed by valencia..and one can certaily bank twice the quality of game he played lookin at the past season….sayin all this, i would love to see nani on left and valencia on right even though nani is better at right than left…

  8. Nani is a good players with an ability to be great…the problem is that he lacks consistency. Valencia on the other hand is consistent and he has the potential to be the next “CRACK” for my beloved Manchester United. If he is able to increase his assists and score in the double figures, he may even be more valuable to us than Ronaldo. Let’s be honest here, that Golden Boot Rooney got should be split in half with Valencia. Rooney and Valencia are the two best players in Manchester United at the moment.

  9. I disagree with you about selling Nani Hugo.
When at his best Nani is probably United’s second best player.

Wheras Valencia is way more reliable, at his best Nani can rip through top club’s players.

I agree that his game yesterday wasn’t the best, but I’m sure he can bounce back, next time with greater fitness levels.

And Hugo, just because Nani has spent 4 seasons at United doen’t mean that should be enough time, he is still quite young and is still developing into a more complete package.

  10. LUISSS ANTONIOOO VALENCIAAAAAAAAA LO MEJORRRRRRRRRRRR DEL MUNDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. I think Nani is a better player than Valencia. Probably the best player united have currently. If anyone to argue, get back to me after next season. But they both should be on starting XI. Nani on the left valencia on the right.

  12. Just happy to have both of them. No other EPL club can boast a better pair of wingers. Hopefully, they go on to improve further, and no injuries please!

Btw – superb article, superb videos…

  13. It is impossible to compare the two, as they are really quite different types of players. Nani is more the skill/flair player, whereas Valencia is the pace and cross type of player. United are quite lucky to have them both and I just hope we can see even better form the two of them this season than we saw last season. Glory glory Man United!!!!

  14. I think both Nani and Valencia are good players. Thank God they are with us at United.

  15. I agree with the pro Nani people. Nani finally came good in the 2nd half of last season. Before that he seldom was given a consistent run.

And for those who knock him on consistency, why do you think he came good last season?

That would be because he got a run for a few games on the right and was outstanding. That gave him the confidence to continue playing well when returned to the left.

Valencia is an excellent winger and I’m delighted to have him but put Nani on the right and I’d back him to be possibly the star player at Utd.

Problem is, you can’t do that and get the best out of both these great assets!

  16. Sorry, but Nani is by far the better option than Valencia.
Valencia still has a lot to develo in his game, he lacks a willingness to run at people and carry the ball and always favours getting to the byeline and trying to cross the ball. A lot of the times he is either closed down or hits it out of play.
Nani is more creative and more skillfull player, yes he can be frustrating at times, but so was Ronaldo.
If he can pick up his form from the end of last season, then he is the winner on that right hand side everytime, far more effective there than on the left and more dangerous than Valencia.

  17. I WONDER WHO THE AUTHOR HAS IN MIND TO PLAY ON THE OPPOSITE WING WHEN ASKING US TO COMMENT…DON’T TELL ME GIGGS! NO, NOT THIS SEASON! TIME FOR THE YOUNG PLAYERS TO GET MORE GAME TIME. THIS WON’T HAPPEN WITH GIGGS AND SCHOLES STANDING IN THEIR WAY. JUST LOOK AT GERMANY’S EXAMPLE WITH BALLACK’S INJURY PAVING WAY FOR A TALENT LIKE KHEDIRA TO FLOURISH. I SAY NANI ON THE LEFT AND VALENCIA ON THE RIGHT, WITH ORBETAN COMING ON FROM THE BENCH TO FRESHEN THINGS UP A LITTLE. WE WILL HAVE THE BEST OF THE TWO…THE UNPREDICTABLE AND THE CONSISTENCY. WITH A MORE INTELLIGENT STRIKER IN THE MAKING OF HERNANDEZ, WE WILL SEE NANI’S EFFORTS BARE MORE FRUIT.

However, I must point out that Valencia’s one-dimension (and one-footedness) could come unstuck against sticky defences (and any one who has missed that is an ignorant fan) thereby making Nani the better player. It all comes down to the culture Sir Alex sets for the team this season. If you want more creativity then you must give an allowance for mistakes. Nani is younger and better than Valencia, but I’d have them both in the same team. I also look forward to seeing Orbetan getting more games ahead of Giggs…he is another talent waiting on the wings.

  18. Great that we have both these world class players.
Two quite different but very effective players and they can only continue to improve. Nani is so skillful with lot’s of tricks and great shooting skill, Valencia is consistent with incredibly accurate pinpoint crosses and both have lighting speed. We also have Rooney and Chicharito, both posseses amazing speed as well, and the genius of Berbatov, experience of Giggs, Scholes and Neville, and youth and desire of Macheda, Cleverly and others. We are Manchester United and we will get our trophy back !

  19. Why compare Nani with Brazillians? He’s not Brazillian.

  20. ANTONIO VALENCIA ALL THE WAY, I BELIVE THIS NEW SEASON HE’S GOING TO BE UNSTOPABLE NOW THAT HE FEELS CONFTERBLE WITH THE TEAM, WE WILL SEE SO MUCH OF VALENCIA SOON TO BE ONE OF UNITEDS BEST PLAYER!!!!!!!!!! SO HAPPY TO HAVE VALENCIA WITH THE REDS

  21. Antonio valencia is way better. And who was the dumbass who said he was brasilian .Hes a ecaudorian player . He makes me proud of being ecaudorian

  22. Antonio Valencia is definitely far better than Nani and he is the best right winger of the Premier League, against Chelsea he beat Ashle Cole every time again and again.

  23. Well i have to say is that valencia is better than nani because what Valencia did in one season nani couldnt do in 4 season. Even if nani skills are better than valencia. (It really great to watch his skills) but the team needs someone that can get the crosses in. The cracks are mouth dropping but what counts is the person that gives the team result

    Valencia > Nani
