Manchester United injury crisis worsens with midfielder Ander Herrera expected to miss action for up to six weeks due to a fractured rib.

Herrara, the £28.8m summer signing from Athletic Bilbao, took a blow to the chest and was substituted in the second half during United’s 2-1 victory over West Ham. United confirmed that the club would continue to monitor his progress, but the Spaniard is facing the prospect of missing the club’s next five Barclays Premier League matches, including some crucial games against Chelsea and Manchester City.

The 25-year-old has already missed three games earlier this season; his latest injury layoff is a massive blow for Louis van Gaal, who has been left frustrated with a litany of injury problems.

Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling are already out, midfielders Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini have yet to return to full fitness and are not available; in addition the United manager will be without his skipper Wayne Rooney, who is suspended for the next three Premier League games, after his red card against West Ham.

The only positive news is Phil Jones has returned to training after a hamstring injury and could be in contention to face Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
