Agent Confirms Fernando Set to Join Manchester City This Week
Manchester City are set to beat Liverpool and Manchester United in signing FC Porto midfielder Fernando Reges.
We earlier reported the 26-year-old is likely to be the Citizens’ first signing of the summer transfer window, which will see City cough up £16m for the Brazilian’s services. The player’s agent Antonio Araujo that if the Portuguese club agrees, the deal is likely to be sealed before the end of this week.
“Everything is in Porto’s hands and we hope to finalise the transfer by the end of the week,” Araujo said, as quoted in Sky Sports.
“Fernando is in the city of Porto waiting for Porto tell him their decision about the documents they have received so that he can travel immediately [to Manchester].”
Despite Fernando’s native being Brazil, he has now been handed a Portuguese passport after staying in the European nation for a while. This has also gone in favour of City as the midfielder do not need a work permit to make a switch to the Etihad.
City have not made any signings in the summer transfer window after winning the Premier League title on the final day of the last season. Should Porto allow Fernando join the Citizens, then he will be their first signing for the new campaign.
The defensive midfielder has also been on Liverpool and United’s radar as they were keen on landing the Brazilian. However, with the agent’s latest comments, it looks like City will soon seal a deal for Fernando.
The arrival of Fernando is likely to cast doubts over Javi García’s future at the club. City could allow the Spaniard leave the Etihad, just two years after signing him from Benfica in 2012.
