Adam Johnson desperate for England call up

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has vowed to fight tooth and nail to get back to the England national squad after failing to make a big impression on a consistent basis since moving to Sunderland in the summer.

Johnson really had a tough time at Manchester City where he couldn’t get regular first team chances under Roberto Mancini, and eventually lost his place in the England set up. His £11 million move to Sunderland was greeted with glee on Wearside, but the 25-year-old has failed to sustain the dizzy heights.

He didn’t participate in the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine in September while he was an unused substitute for the clashes with San Marino and Poland the following month.

Johnson was overlooked again by Roy Hodgson for the November friendly against Sweden and last week’s victory over Brazil and he is now determined to impress the England manager with more consistent performances at the Stadium of Light. He was quoted in the press:

“It’s always difficult because I have been in the squad for a while and then I have been overlooked for the last couple of games.

“I have just got to get my head down and get better, really. If I do that, then I am confident that I can work my way back into the squad.”

Inconsistency is the only demon that has prevented Johnson from achieving his true potential and the winger himself admits that too.

It has to be noted that in his last season at City, he made 26 appearances for the club, where as Mario Balotelli, who joined AC Milan in January, managed only 23 league games, but it was the Italian whose consistency earned him a place at the Euro 2012 whereas Johnson was seen no where near the vicinity of the England camp.

A similar sort of story has been observed at Sunderland as well so far. He has scored four goals in 22 Premier League appearances this season while he has dazzled only in patches.
