In an interview with French magazine L’Equipe, AC Milan midfielder Jérémy Ménez has admitted he received an approach from Manchester United.

The 27-year old midfielder admitted that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to bring him to Old Trafford ten years ago.

Jérémy Ménez said:

“Am I afraid that my career is a mess? No, that’s the way fate would have it.  I accomplished the dream of every young person in training: play Ligue 1 at seventeen years old.

“I refused the offer to join [Sir] Alex Ferguson at Manchester United because I felt it was too soon and because I wanted to start with my first club. All this has been carefully considered. At twenty-seven years, I still have to win titles and I want to show my potential. This has not been the case.”

Instead, Ménez stayed with Sochaux for the first two seasons of his professional career before moving across the country to AS Monaco in 2006.

Two years later the French international got a big move to AS Roma in Italy’s Serie A.  By now he had made a name for himself – a talented footballer, but one with a fiery temperament.

He would stay in the Italian capital for three seasons before moving back home and with Paris Saint-Germain in 2011.  After losing out on regular first-team football in his third season with the club after their rich owners were bring a wealth of talent in, Jérémy Ménez joined AC Milan over the summer.

Like Manchester United of this season, Milan are in a rebuilding phase after too missing out on European football this season.  Their similarities with the Premier League giants don’t end there as they look capable of qualifying for UEFA Champions League football this season but not yet strong enough to maintain a title challenge.

Jérémy Ménezhas won two league titles and the French Cup on one occasion with Paris Saint-Germain.  These are the only honours of his career since winning the UEFA European under-17 Championship back in 2004 as a highly-rated teenager.

In that time, he perhaps missed out on a decade of success with Manchester United who have won four Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League in that time.

The 24-time French international still has years left in him to lift more silverware and not look back on his career with big regret for turning down one of the biggest football club’s in the world.
