Abramovich to sack Mourinho in the summer

Jose Mourinho has been good for the English Premiership since he moved to Chelsea in June 2004.

The press has adored him ever since he arrived - because almost every press conference he gives becomes news based on the outlandish comments he makes. To say he is outspoken is an understatement.

However, since January, he has fallen out with Roman Abramovich – the Chelsea owner - over his reported unwillingness to sign a center back for the injured John Terry. Since that time Mourinho seems to have undertaken several actions which seem designed to have Roman Abramovich relieve him of his Chelsea duties.

The latest episode is his trip to Spain last Sunday to watch Chelsea’s Champions League quarterfinal opponents Valencia, in action against Osasuna. During that Spanish visit Mourinho said: “I would like to coach Madrid, and I do not discard doing that in the future. It would be an honor for me.” He also gave a television interview after the match in which he again admitted his dream was one day to take charge of the Real Madrid club.

Certainly Real Madrid is badly in need of a top manager. Their overall performance over the last several years is mediocre at best with their last European Champions league win – their ninth in total – in 2002 and their last La Liga championship in 2003. For a club of Real Madrid’s standing this is plainly unacceptable.

If Real Madrid is really interested in hiring Mourinho they will need to understand that the comments and publicity he will create will be outrageous. This is part of his personality and some of his outbursts have been embarrassing to the Chelsea club and would be embarrassing to a club like Real Madrid.

This is the downside of having Mourinho as manager – the upside of course is that he would very quickly bring success back to Real Madrid.

It’s not at all clear that Roman Abromovich will put up with this nonsense for too much longer and it would hardly be a surprise if he is already lining up a replacement for Mourinho. The likely favorite is Gus Hiddink, currently manager of the Russian national team and being paid in full or in part by Abramovich himself.

My view is that Mourhino knows he is out in the summer – which is why he’s doing little to solve the contract situation with Lampard and Terry – two players he would love to take with him if he were to get the Real job.

For Roman Abromovich he has already decided Mourinho must go – he has been too embarrassing to both Chelsea and Abromovich – who will always be top man at Chelsea, as long as he remains the owner, and why not?

  1. “I would like to coach Madrid, and I do not discard doing that in the future. It would be an honor for me.

WRONG..not what he said…he said it would be a honour for any coach to train Madrid. He also said it was something for the future as he has a contract at Chelsea till 2010.

“For Roman Abromovich he has already decided Mourinho must go “….oh you’ve spoken to Roman about this have you…

Woudln;t it be nice if someone wrote an article based on fact not rumour and gossip!!!

  2. Please - do us all a favour and don’t write about things you have no knowledge of. Ill-informed rubbish like this just gives blogs a bad name.

The whole Mourinho/Madrid episode has been - as expected - blown out of all proportion by the English press, obviously to their own ends. I do not understand why fans get sucked in by it all. See the official Chelsea FC website for clarification.

And for what it’s worth - Mourinho has absolutely nothing to do with player contracts. Such things are dealt with my Peter Kenyon et al.

What do you think you are, a Sun newspaper “journalist”?

  3. I’m afraid I just don’t see it happening. It would be a horrible move to let Jose leave, as he has the best chance of leading them to a Champion’s League victory out of anybody. That said, if they win it this year, that makes his departure SLIGHTLY more likely.

  4. Johnny and Robin - the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. Abramovich didn’t get to have his $18M oil fortune without a big ego and a ruthless streak.
I don’t think he will put up with the nonsense from Mourinho - I think he will go in the sumnmer - we shall see.
  5. Ed…you speak like you actually know what is going on…
Yes he may leave…but only RA knows for certain…so again this at the moment is all just speculation….
Dont try and justify this cr@p by sproating more rubbish..

  6. Who knows JM *might*, there is always this possibility of wierd things happening, maybe SAF falls really sick and leaves football, maybe Wenger goes cutting woods in the Amazon, maybe Benitez falls in love with Kylie Minogue and moves to Australia.

“My view is that Mourhino knows he is out in the summer – which is why he’s doing little to solve the contract situation with Lampard and Terry – two players he would love to take with him if he were to get the Real job.”

C’mon mannnnnn…. you just defined the word SPECULATION…. haha you should consider trading crude oil futures on the exchange!

Ed, I’ve read and liked your articles on this blog. Please maintain your quality dude, that’s all I wanna say.

  7. And Roman has lot more money than $18M, Forbes recently measured it in excess of $20B!

  8. Azar - a mistake - I meant $18B (I get the Ms and Bs mixed up sometimes - laugh).
